Candidates

Congratulations! You have taken your first few steps toward becoming a member of Tau Beta Pi (TBP)! We are the nation’s second oldest honor society and the oldest engineering-specific honor society. We hope you complete the candidacy process this semester and have a great time doing it. Please feel free to contact us (texas.alpha@gmail.com) if you have any concerns.

Candidate Eligibility

Tau Beta Pi membership is by invitation only. Every semester we invite the top ⅛ of the junior class and the top ⅕ of the senior class to join. Invitations will go out after the 4th class day of the semester.

Candidate Requirements

  1. Fulfill Eligibility Requirements
    • If you have received the email invitation from Tau Beta Pi, then congratulations! You have already fulfilled this requirement.
  2. Attend an Informal Candidate One-on-One Meeting
    • Meet with an officer so we can get to know one another!
  3. Attend All General Meetings
    • Candidates are required to attend all general organization meetings. These occur on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 and will be held in person throughout the semester.
  4. Pay Dues
    • Dues for joining TBP are $110. This is a one-time, lifetime membership fee.
  5. Obtain 5 Social Points
    • Attend a few of our many social events put on by our wonderful social coordinators! These are great opportunities to meet our chapter actives and fellow candidates. You need to attend a total of 5 socials – equivalent to approximately 5 hours.
  6. Obtain 5 Service Points
    • Earn service points by participating in TBP-sponsored events organized by our service coordinators. You may also submit service hours you earn outside of TBP events. You need to complete 5 hours of community service in total!
  7. Obtain 5 Internal Points
    • Internal points can be fulfilled by helping out at TBP fundraisers, or by attending alumni events, lunch and learns, faculty firesides, or professional development events. You need to attend five total events, of those five one of them must be a Faculty Fireside, and another one must be a Professional Development event.
  8. Hangout with your Big 2 Times
    • Have lunch, hang out virtually, or attend an event with your TBP Big twice throughout the semester. Your Big is here to help you throughout your candidacy, so feel free to get to know them and ask questions!
  9. Complete a Signature Block
    • This is a tool for you to get to know others in TBP! You must get a total of 30 signatures: all 16 Officers, 10 of your fellow candidates, and 4 actives.
  10. Pass the Constitution Quiz
    • The constitution quiz allows candidates to learn about the history of TBP. A study guide and more information will be provided closer to the quiz date.
  11. Polish a Bent
    • Polishing a rough cast bent is a national requirement for all TBP candidates. This task typically takes 10-20 hours and is one that we would recommend you start early. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! See our Bent Polishing Guide if you need help getting started!
  12. Fulfill Family Requirements
    • The Family requirements are intended to help you get to know your family members better. These include creating a Family Scrapbook Page, participating with your family, and coordinating dress-up day outfits.
  13. Attend Initiation
    • Initiation is an extremely important event! You must attend initiation to join TBP. If you are not able to make it, please let us know!
    • For the Spring 2024 semester, initiation is scheduled for Friday, April 12th.

As Tau Bates, one of our core values is community service and we want to set a precedent by rewarding those members who have performed outstanding community service. Please answer the questions on the form linked below and upload a copy of your resume to complete the application. We highly encourage all members of the organization to apply!

The deadline to complete this application for Spring 2022 is Sunday, 05/01 @ 11:59 p.m. 1-2 winners will be selected and awarded $250 – 500 from TBP’s endowment funds. The selection committee of this application will be comprised of our advisors and select members of the officer team.
