History

The Center for Transdisciplinary Collaborative Research in Self-Management
Science (TCRSS) was funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Institute for
Nursing Research (PI: Dr. Miyong Kim; P30NR015335, 09/25/2014 – 07/31/2021).
The Transdisciplinary Collaborative Research in Self-Management Science (TCRSS) was established to develop, test, and disseminate innovative self-management solutions to improve the health outcomes of people with chronic conditions.

Theoretical Model of TCRSS

We use the modified chronic care model as our theoretical framework to guide the scientific process of our Center. Understanding the influence of all types of resources is critical for constructing ways to enhance self-management support and ultimately improved health capabilities and self-care outcomes of people with chronic illnesses or conditions.

Transdisciplinary Research

We operationalize transdisciplinary research as a rigorous process that integrates multiple disciplinary
perspectives through active inclusion and participation of pertinent stakeholders in research protocol
design, delivery and dissemination to further advance science with shared long-term goals.

Self-Management Science

Self-management science posits that the patient assumes the primary role in managing their own chronic illness care, while the health care professional supports and empowers the patient to take responsibility for their own health. The goal of self-management interventions is to assist patients in becoming informed and activated partners in their own health care, including but not limited to making decisions about medications, diagnostic or medical procedures, and which health behavior goals to pursue.
