JetBrians Student License

JetBrains provides a suite of products for programming, including CLion and PyCharm used in the course. Here shows how to apply for a JetBrains student license to use them for free.

(1) You can search “jetbrains student license” on Google, or directly go through this link to learn about and apply for a free education license for students. Just click “Apply now” under “for students and teachers”.

(2) Then you will see a form. You may choose to apply with any one of the four methods. It is recommended to apply with university email address (use your UTmail ending with utexas.edu.), or with official document.

(2-1) If you apply with UTmail, just fill out all the information and submit. You will receive an email from JetBrains like the following. Click the “Confirm Request” in the email, then you will enter a site showing license agreement. Review and accept their license agreement. Click “I accept”at the bottom of the site. Then, you will see “Welcome to JetBrains Account”.

(2-2) It is possible that you may encouter some error while you apply with UTmail, like the following screenshot. If so, you should use other three approaches to get you student license. Both “Official document” and “Github” are recommended. Just follow the corresponding guidance on the webpage and some details of these two methods are listed below for your information.

(2-3) If you choose to use official document, you may be delayed for several days. But don’t worry. you can use the 30-day free trial to use the software during that period.

Here shows the necessary information you need to apply with “official document” method.

– Website of your academic institution: https://www.utexas.edu (the “https://” is needed)
– Official documents: (recommended by LA David Oh)
1. Front and back of Student ID Card
2. Unofficial transcript or academic summary found here: https://onestop.utexas.edu/student-records/transcripts-other-records/unofficial-records/
Even though the website says it’ll take a few weeks to apply through this method, we both got my license renewed on the same day. You should definitely do the 30-day free trial while you wait.

(2-4) Some of you may have a concern about sending your presonal ID to JetBrains. There is another possible way to avoid that. If you already have a Github student pack under your Github account, you can click the “Github” next to “official document” option on the webpage to connect your Github account and JetBrains account, and then get JetBrains student license. If you don’t have one, you can apply through this site to get the Github student pack. Applying for Github student pack also requires your UTmail at least. Also, Github may require additional documents like what you need in application for JetBrains free license. However, different company may have different blacklists of the school mails, which is the reason why you should give it a try as a workaround for sending your personal ID.

(3) Once you get a student license, you will be directed to the webpage where you can log in to your existing account or create a new one. Then, you have a JetBrains account with a student license.

(4) Almost done! After login, You should see a list of products you can use for free as shown below. If you cannot see any licenses or products, please follow this blog again and make sure every step is done successfully. Remeber your account name and password; you need use it again after your installation.
