FE & PE LICENSURE PATHWAY

Understanding the FE and PE Licensure Process

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and Professional Engineer (PE) license are key steps toward becoming a licensed engineer. Below is an overview of what the FE and PE are, the requirements involved, and the steps students can take to prepare for licensure.

Why Become a Professional Engineer (PE)?

Earning your PE license can provide significant benefits to your professional career:

  • Career Advancement: Licensure open up higher-paying roles, leadership positions, and consulting opportunities.
  • Credibility & Trust: Assures employers and clients that you have expertise that is required for complex projects.
  • Legal Requirements: PE licensure is required for signing off on certain projects that impact public safety
  • Professional Recognition: Having a PE demonstrates technical expertise and ethical responsibility.

Path to Becoming a PE

Step 1: Graduate from an ABET-accredited engineering program.

Step 2: Pass the FE exam to become an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Engineer Intern (EI).

Step 3: Gain four years of relevant work experience under the supervision of a licensed PE.

Step 4: Pass the PE exam in your specific engineering discipline.

Step 5: Apply for licensure to officially become a Professional Engineer (PE).

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam

The FE exam is an important step to becoming a PE. It is a comprehensive exam testing your fundamental engineering knowledge. To be eligible, you must have completed an ABET-accredited engineering degree or be near graduation.

Preparation for the FE:

  • Review NCEES guidelines (exam structure, duration, and number of questions).
  • Take advantage of online courses and practice exams.
  • Use official FE Exam Study Guides

Earning Your EIT Status

Passing the FE exam grants you the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Engineer Intern (EI) professional status. This designation signifies that you have successfully completed the educational and foundational knowledge requirements needed to be a professional engineer.

As an EIT, you are allowed to work under the supervision of a licensed PE. Holding this status is also a strict prerequisite for taking the PE exam once you have gained the required experience.
