Several students work under the supervision of David Bogard, each with their own distinct research focus.
Elise Flachs, a PhD candidate, is conducting research in film cooling effectiveness at engine realistic Mach numbers. Specifically, she is experimentally characterizing shaped film cooling hole performance on a 2D airfoil geometry using the High-Speed Wind Tunnel Facility. Her work also includes high temperature validation of advanced external and internal airfoil cooling configurations enabled by additive manufacturing.

Ameya Kulkarni, a master’s student, is conducting research on engine realistic overall cooling effectiveness at low Mach numbers. Specifically, he is computationally and experimentally exploring the effects of thermal barrier coatings on flat plate film cooling configurations at the Low-Speed Wind Tunnel Facility. The ultimate goal of his work is to discover an optimal film cooling configuration for a flat plate covered by a thermal barrier coating. This configuration will then be further explored on an airfoil.

Emma Bond is a masters student who joined TTCRL in Fall 2024. She will be working closely with Elise at the high speed tunnel facility over the course of her thesis.
