Fieldwork Internships with Brighter Bites – Spring 22

About Brighter Bites

Brighter Bites is a nonprofit that creates communities of health through fresh food with the goal of changing behavior among children and their families to prevent obesity and achieve long-term health. Brighter Bites is an evidence-based, multi-component elementary school, preschool, and summer camp program that provides reliable access to fruits and vegetables, nutrition education, and consistent exposure to recipes and messages that feature fresh food.

Since 2012, Brighter Bites has provided more than 19 million pounds of produce and 100,000s of nutrition education materials to more than 53,000 families and teachers in Houston, Dallas, Austin, New York City, Washington D.C., and Southwest Florida.

Fieldwork Internship Overview

Brighter Bites offers fieldwork internships in our programming department to students and non-students interested in public health, nutrition, and nonprofit work. Fieldwork internships are ideal for anyone who wants to gain experience working with a public health nonprofit or students who only need to fulfill community fieldwork hours required by their school/program. Fieldwork interns are exposed to all components of Brighter Bites programming to gain a well-rounded understanding of how a public health community nutrition non-profit operates.

Programming fieldwork internships are offered in three cohorts – fall, spring, and summer (dates vary based on city). Applicants who can commit to the full school year (fall + spring cohorts) preferred, but candidates who can commit to only one semester are also encouraged to apply.

Position Description

  • Collaborates with Brighter Bites Program Director, Manager, Coordinators, and Associates in the field and office.
  • Completes Learning Objective reflections provided by manager by specified deadlines (10%).
  • Assists Program Coordinators and Associates with fieldwork (90%), including, but not limited to:
    • Working and communicating effectively with key site contacts, site volunteers, and
      families to create a friendly, fun, and health-conscious environment and to offer guidance and support for nutrition and culinary inquiries.
    • Participating in the bagging process, including setting up, bagging produce, monitoring volunteers, initiating and participating in clean-up efforts, delivering bags to teachers’ classrooms, and distributing bags and educational materials to parent and community volunteers.
    • Participating in the distribution process, including setting up, encouraging families to try the recipe sample, recording family participation on rosters, distributing nutrition education materials and produce to families, playing educational games with children, administering surveys to parents/guardians, and helping families to their cars.
    • Motivating site staff, volunteers, and families to engage with Brighter Bites staff.
    • Assisting Brighter Bites staff with preparation of weekly food samples, teaching student nutrition lessons, nutrition material development, and fieldwork photography as needed.
  • Assists team with other small projects on an as-needed basis.

Requirements

  • Commit to a minimum of 8 hrs/week Monday – Friday; mostly fieldwork.
  • Conversational Spanish language skills a plus.
  • Must be able to travel independently to office and school sites around city area.
  • Must be able to lift boxes/bags weighing up to 50 pounds each on a continuous basis.
    Displayed interest in nutrition education, public health, dietetics, food justice, culinary arts, and/or childhood obesity prevention.
  • A passion for sharing the power of fresh food with others, especially elementary-age children in an educational setting.
  • A positive and energetic attitude and initiative.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Basic culinary, math, and computer skills.

Brighter Bites & COVID-19

Health Communications Social Media Internship with Resilient Georgia – Spring 2022

 

About Resilient Georgia:

Our mission at Resilient Georgia is to lead a state-wide coalition to develop a closely aligned trauma-informed public and private network working toward a united vision to create a birth through 26 year-old integrated behavioral health system. This includes the use of essential tools such as education/teaching/training, workforce development, policy strengthening, practice research, and evaluation. Resilient Georgia is among the only organizations focused on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) prevention and increasing trauma-informed awareness and care delivery through statewide coalitions.

Health Communications Social Media Internship Details:

Our Health Communications Social Media Intern will help to build and shape a visitor’s experience with our social media channels to help further Resilient Georgia’s ability to share our work, highlight innovation and partnerships, and promote best practice resources and training. The intern will work closely with the Executive Director & Director, Strategy & Operations to receive weekly strategic input & guidance, and to ensure that all design and content aligns with Resilient Georgia’s communication objectives, vision & mission.

Social Media Responsibilities:

  • Ideate, create and post content to different social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn & YouTube)
  • Plan and adhere to content calendars to schedule posts on different social media platforms
  • Track user traffic and assess user response to different content posted
  • Plan social media campaigns to reach a wider audience and increase awareness
  • Align social media content across all communications channels including newsletter, website, and blog posts
  • Increase online interaction and engagement with state and national partners and stakeholders

Internship with Tarrytown Pharmacy – Spring 2022

Tarrytown Pharmacy

About us

Tarrytown Pharmacy has been serving the Austin community since 1941, and has brought top-notch service to our patients. We are also one of the leading compounding pharmacies in the city of Austin and the state of Texas.

Tarrytown Pharmacy, originally owned by Guy Kelly, opened its doors the day before Pearl Harbor Day on December 6, 1941, at 3310 Windsor Road. Soon thereafter Mr. Kelly sold the store to Gatewood Newberry, a local investor and businessman. In 1950 Gatewood sold the store to his younger brother Jack (J.D.) Newberry, who lived on Cherry Lane with his wife, Helen, and two children Brian and Neal. J.D. raised his family in Tarrytown, eventually moving to Mountain Laurel Lane to a development his uncle William Gatewood had established. J.D. and Helen had two more children – Keith and Sharon – and continued running the store until 1973.

That year, JD and Helen’s eldest son Brian and wife Judy purchased the store. Brian had graduated from The University of Texas College of Pharmacy in 1968 and spent 5 years gaining experience in chain stores and hospital pharmacies in Austin and Dallas. When Brian took over operations, he made the decision to remove the Soda Fountain and expanded the inventory. The pharmacy continued its legacy as a central gathering place for Tarrytown residents.

In 1986, Brian and his wife Gail moved into a larger space across the parking lot, next door to the Tarrytown Post Office. The move enabled the Newberrys to expand their gift, card, and cosmetic offerings while maintaining efficient pharmacy operations. Tarrytown Pharmacy has been a backbone of the neighborhood, and the Austin community, for over 75 years. We regularly donate merchandise, time, and funds to local schools and charities and we pride ourselves in our community service – service that begins with our customers. We know their names and their families, and they know ours. Many of them have been shopping with us for five generations and we value their trust and loyalty.

Tarrytown Pharmacy continues to be owned and operated by the Newberry family – the third generation owner Mark Newberry, and his wife Leslie Newberry, are continuing in Brian and J.D.’s traditions of service, community, and dependability.

Internship Opportunity – Pharmacy Technician Trainee

We are looking for interns for our community compounding lab. Interns would be paid part-time employees and commit to 1 or 2 shifts per week. Since we are a pharmacy, interns would have to obtain a Technician in Training license through the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, which can be done online.
