In conjunction with this summer’s UTeach CSP Dallas teacher training is a one-day workshop strand on Thursday, July 20 for school counselors called Counselors for Computing. Did you know counselors can play a big part in increasing broader participation in computing and helping students understand their career options? With the right supports, they do!
The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) Counselors for Computing program offers professional development to counselors in schools offering new computing courses, such as Exploring Computer Science and Computer Science Principles. Please encourage your counselor colleagues to apply. Share this invitation with your counseling team today, and let them know you look forward to collaborating on their return!
Topics covered will include
- National–and especially–local computer science education initiatives that lead to more course offerings. This includes HB 5 and overarching efforts of CS4TX Computer Science for Texas, y’all!
- What new courses are like, why and how they are different from what’s come before, and how they count toward graduation and preparation for postsecondary pathways.
- Why computer science is a fundamental literacy, no matter what your students’ plans.
Requirements: A Counselor Participant
- Works in a school where computer science is taught
- Is within driving distance of the University of Texas, Dallas
- Has your and your school administrator’s support to apply what they gain through the workshop

- Where – UT Dallas – Richardson, TX
- Cost – $25 registration fee becomes a $75 stipend upon completion!
