Just before the start of the 2018-19 school year, Google named the UT STEM Center as a recipient of a Computer Science (CS) Education Research Award. These awards are aimed at addressing the need for more research into the best ways to improve and expand CS education. The UT STEM Center, the parent organization of WeTeach_CS, was honored to be one of five institutions across the nation to receive a CS Education Research Award.
Project ROCS (Rural Opportunities in Computer Science) aims to produce a framework for collecting and reporting outcome measures that accurately portray the nature and extent of access to and participation in K-12 computer science education, especially for students in rural communities. The WeTeach_CS collective impact project will be the context for examining longitudinal changes in access and participation for traditionally underrepresented students and communities with a specific focus on determining the factors that distinguish successful from unsuccessful schools and districts in terms of ensuring equitable access to all students. Project ROCS will allow researchers to present viable solutions for measuring, scaling, and sustaining equitable access to computer science education within rural communities and other historically underserved populations. Key personnel for Project ROCS include, STEM Center Deputy Director Dr. Carol Fletcher (PI), Assistant Director of Project Evaluation Services, Dr. Lisa Garbrecht (Co-PI), and Research Associate, Dr. Jayce Warner (Co-PI).
