Software engineers, artificial intelligence architects, and data scientists from Rice University’s School of Engineering and the top technology companies across the U.S. have joined forces to lead summer computer science courses at the highest levels of rigor. Each one-week immersive course is modeled after graduate-level engineering programs where students are challenged to solve complex challenges and apply various types of computational capabilities.
Sessions take place at innovation tech hubs in downtown Austin, including Capital Factory and Hack Reactor. The full 45-hour experience is divided between direct instruction, team work and group challenges, structured independent work, creativity time, community and culture building, and career readiness. The week-long experiences include pre-course preparatory work, a post course self-paced guide, a speaker series from a range of computer scientists across various fields, a Saturday showcase event, and a morning field trip where students shadow a group of engineers in their own workplace. Please see pictures from the program’s photo gallery to get a better sense of our learning experiences.
This program is intended for students with an interest in design, creative problem solving, and computer science. The summer programs are open to all levels and will differentiate based on previous exposure to engineering concepts, with the ultimate aim of laying the foundation for successful careers in tomorrow’s technology-driven world and building skills and confidence in STEM subjects. We’d like to strongly encourage girls to join the program – early exposure to computer science and engineering concepts improves confidence in the field and significantly increases students’ likelihood of majoring in these subjects in college!
