This event, originally part of the exclusive professional development provided to members of the Texas Regional Collaboratives (TRC), is now open to all Texas STEM teachers. So if you’re interested in teaching engineering or the Argument-Driven model, register today!
Dr. Victor Sampson, a team of researchers from the UT STEM Center, and a group of classroom teachers will lead 1.5 day facilitation academy about a new instructional approach called Argument-Driven Engineering. This new instructional approach gives students in grades 6-12 an opportunity to learn science content and process TEKS, ELA TEKS, and important engineering practices at the same time. The academy is designed to prepare participants to lead an 9-hour professional development workshop for teachers in their collaboratives. Academy participants will:
- Learn how authentic engineering designs tasks can help students learn science content and process TEKS, engineering practices, and ELA skills at the same time while helping them develop positive STEM attitudes.
- Experience an Argument-Driven Engineering lesson first hand.
- Discuss ways to provide an educative professional learning experience for teachers, including strategies for promoting meaningful conversations among teachers and strategies for supporting teachers as they learn how to use a new instructional approach.
The 9-hour workshop for teachers focuses on topics including Newton’s Laws, science process skills, engineering design, and the importance of arguing from evidence in both science and engineering. This workshop is designed for teachers in grades 6-12. Each participate will receive a workshop facilitator kit. TEKS alignment will be made available upon request.
