It’s not every day four dozen students take over the Texas House of Representatives, but that’s what happened to kick off CS Education Week in Texas this past Monday (December 4, 2017) during Hour of Code at the Capitol.
UT Center for STEM Education’s WeTeach_CS project collaborated with CS4TX organizations and 10 schools from across Texas to host the first Hour of Code at the Capitol on Dec 4, 2017. Teams of students all gathered on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives to demonstrate their coding and CS projects employing robots such as Sphero, Dash, and Dot, languages such as Scratch, Javascript, and C++, and even virtual reality with Unity. Several state representatives and numerous legislative staffers were taught how to code by the students using pair programming techniques. The school districts represented included Austin ISD, Pflugerville ISD, Leander ISD, Hays CISD, Lufkin ISD, Richardson ISD, North East ISD, Spring Branch ISD, and the Science and Technology Discovery charter school. State Representative Donna Howard kicked off the event with a short speech highlighting the need for the Texas legislature to invest in K-12 computer science education.
