LIUYANG SUN JOINS THE LAB AS A POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW

The Xie lab welcome another well-trained experimental physicist! Liuyang got his Ph. D. (May 2018) from the department of Physics at UT Austin, Xiaoqin (Elaine) Li’s group. He studied excitons in 2D materials using ultrafast lasers for his Ph. D. research. We hope he will enjoy interacting with neurons in the coming few years.

Chong, Lan and three Ph. D students, Hanlin, Xue, and Zhengtuo attended the inaugural Gordon research conference on Neural interface at Galveston, TX. Chong gave an invited presentation on “A Nanoelectronic Platform for Reliable Recording, Large-Scale Mapping and Long-Term Tracking of Neural Activity”. Lan was selected to give a a rapid-fire presentation on “Chronic, spatially resolved tracking of hemodynamics and neural activity in neurovascular disease models”.

In collaboration with Dr. Ying Han in the department of ophthalmology at UCSF, the Xie Lab will investigate fibrosis-free glaucoma drainage implants with a R21 award from National eye institute.

Dr. Lan Luan receive a 5-year research development award (K25) from National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). This grant will support the development of her independent research on biomedical fields integrating her quantitative background (Physics). Using the support, Lan will explore neurovascluar coupling in health and in neurological disease models. A postdoc fellow position or a Ph.D student position is available on this topic. NEW PAPER ON MULTIMODAL NEURAL PROBE PUBLISHED ON NANO LETTERS.

Our paper “Nanoelectronic Coating Enabled Versatile Multifunctional Neural Probes” is published on Nano Letters. In this paper, we report a novel multifunctional neural probe platform realized by applying ultrathin nanoelectronic coating on the surfaces of conventional microscale devices such as optical fibers and micropipettes. We hope to provides a low-cost, versatile approach to construct multifunctional neural probes that can be applied to both fundamental and translational neuroscience.
CHONG IS AWARDED A R01 FROM NINDS

Chong is awarded a R01 from NINDS for developing reliable chronic neural recording. With this support, we will design and optimize neural probes with dimensions, surgical footprint and mechanical compliance matching that of the living tissue. We hope to mitigate in-vivo device failure modes and suppress tissue reactions to achieve chronically reliable electrical recording. See the department news for more details.
LAN IS AWARDED A R21 FROM NINDS

Lan is awarded a R21 from NINDS to study the hemodynamic and neural consequences of peri-infarct depolarization after ischemic stroke. We will combine our ultraflexible NET electrodes with advanced functional imaging techniques in the Dunn lab to simultaneous map neural activity and hemodynamic parameters in a mouse stroke model with fine control on the lesion size and location. This marks our first application of NET electrodes for disease models. Thank you NINDS for the funding support!

Our group’s first paper, “Ultraflexible nanoelectronic probes form reliable, glial scar–free neural integration”, is published on Science advances with a cover image. We showed in this work by engineering the dimension and rigidity of neural probes it became possible to reliably record and track individual neurons over long term and to form seamless integration with living brain.

Dr. Xie and his collaborator, Dr. Ying Han, M.D., Ph. D, an ophthalmologist from University of California San Francisco (UCSF), have received funds from a UCSF Catalyst Award and That Man May See. The awards will provide seed funding for Xie and Han to develop an improved glaucoma implant device.

Dr. Chong Xie and collaborator Dr. Aaron Baker are awarded a grant from DOD to develop regenerative, ultra-compliant electrodes for stable interfaces with the peripheral nervous system.The project will combine tissue engineering techniques from Dr. Baker’s group and nanobioelectronic techniques from our group to create extremely flexible electrodes that may be used to restore function to patients with nerve damage and allow neural control of artificial limbs for amputees.
