Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students, and nearly 20% report having seriously considered attempting suicide in their lifetime. Alcohol and drug use often play a role in these suicidal crises. This presentation will address the intersection of substance use and abuse and suicidality in college students.

In the U.S., approximately 1 in 7 Latina teens attempts suicide. Problematic alcohol and substance use have been shown to be significantly associated with adolescent suicide attempts. This presentation explores the links among family environment, sociocultural context, suicidal behaviors, and substance use among Latina teens.
