Girl Day at UT Austin 2022: Build a City!

What: The annual Girl Day @ UT Austin 2022 event presented by UT Austin’s WiSTEM (Women in STEM)

Who: CM2 Consortium members, STEM role models, and volunteers

When & Where: Saturday, February 19, 2022 from 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM CST online via Gatherly


CM2 STEM Challenge: Build A City!

The Challenge: What makes a good city? What are all the parts of a city? How do city leaders decide what to put in a city? In this lesson kids are asked to build a model of their ideal city.

Recommended Grades: Kindergarten – 6th Grade

Recommended Materials: Legos, Play-doh, paper, crayons, markers, toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, tubing, cardboard boxes, tape, or any materials you can think of to build a cityscape

Design something digitally! Use the following digital tools to design a cityscape online

  • Sketchup — for making objects or buildings
  • StreetMix — play around with what a street could look like

Watch CM2 STEM Role Models Lisa Loftus-Otway and Samira Bashir build a city out of candy!

How does this activity connect to STEM and today’s Girl Day theme of Designing for Communities, People and Animals? This lesson encourages kids to explore the complexity of cities and helps them understand the impact of people’s everyday decisions on the places where they live, work, and play.
