Getting Around Austin

Austin offers several convenient ways to get around, especially if you prefer biking or using scooters.

MetroBike: This bike-sharing program, operated by CapMetro and the City of Austin, allows you to rent bikes from various stations around the city. Use the BCycle app to find the nearest bike station, buy a pass, and start riding.

Scooters: Companies like Bird, Lime, LINK, and Wheels provide scooters that are available throughout downtown and other parts of the city. Simply download the respective app to locate and rent a scooter.

Public Transportation: CapMetro offers extensive bus and rail services that can help you navigate the city efficiently.

Ride-Sharing Services: Popular ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are available via their apps. The self-driving robotaxi, Waymo, is also currently being tested in downtown Austin.

Parking in Austin

Navigating parking in Austin can be a bit tricky, but there are plenty of options to make it easier. The city offers a mix of street parking, parking garages, and lots. For on-street parking, you can use the Park ATX app to pay and manage your parking sessions.

There are also several parking garages downtown, such as the Lavaca Plaza Garage and the 300 W 6th St Garage.

There is no free visitor parking on campus, so you are advised to park in one of the parking garages. These are ticketed and billed based on the amount of time you are in the garage.

The San Jacinto Garage is the closest to the Peter O’Donnell Building – by 9am it is usually full.

On campus, UT Austin has various parking garages and lots on campus, but it’s best to plan ahead and consider using public transportation or ride-sharing services for convenience.
