2020 Affiliated Events
In addition to four full days of dynamic panels and speakers, UT Energy Week includes the following activities:
Energy Analytics Session: February 17
Center for Analytics and Transformative Technologies (CATT)
The Energy Analytics session aims to highlight several aspects of the exciting applications of analytics in energy markets. Energy Analytics can be very broadly thought of as quantitative methods in the energy industry and includes artificial intelligence, machine learning, mathematical modeling, and optimization. We have brought together some exciting speakers that will highlight various trends and applications in both academia and the industry. See the agenda here. Registration is free and available separately or together with UT Energy Week registration.
Professional Development Workshop for Science Teachers: February 18
At this free daylong workshop, educators will hear from energy industry professionals, learn about current energy trends, and experience new energy-related lessons from Longhorn Energy Club that can be apply into their classroom curriculum.
Participating teachers will learn how you can include Planet Texas 2050, a UT research initiative, themed activities in your classroom! The goals of Planet Texas 2050 include creating a sustainable future for Texas by the year 2050, when Texas’ population is projected to double. We want to motivate, inspire and make your students start thinking about their future. Our team has designed lessons and activities to introduce ideas and develop solutions regarding our foundational pillars of water, energy, urbanization, and ecosystem services. TEKS aligned activities simulate climatic and human impacts to finite resources, address the challenges in sustainable and unsustainable lifestyles, and pose thought or discussion questions for the students to understand the real-world applications to these challenges. We have 20 slots available that will include conference registration for the day and pay for substitute teachers, breakfast, lunch, and snacks/beverages.
We encourage all teachers to attend, as many activities are easily adaptable to class size, time, and also all of them aligned with the TEKS. Eight hours of CPE credits will be provided for attending this workshop. To register please email Natally Mendez.
Student Research Competition: February 18
Thanks to sponsorship from the Cockrell School of Engineering, the student energy research poster competition offers cash prizes for students who present their research on innovative approaches to solving energy challenges. The three categories of submissions include:
- Renewable or alternative energy and energy storage technologies
- Emerging oil & gas technologies and solutions, and
- Economic, policy, and legal analyses.
Students of all academic disciplines are encouraged to submit abstracts to be included in the event. We are actively seeking industry experts to help judge the competition.
More info about the research competition can be found here. Please contact the Longhorn Energy Club VPs of Research, Max Brozynski and Hamidou Drame with questions and/or interest in judging.
Networking Reception: February 18
A networking reception will be held concurrently with the student research competition industry. We invite and encourage all panelists and conference guests to attend and meet UT’s brightest energy students!
Women in Energy Breakfast: February 19
UT Energy Week 2020 will introduce the inaugural Women in Energy breakfast on the morning of February 19. This breakfast is associated with UT Energy Week but does not require conference registration. Please contact Jenny Sauer if you are interested in receiving the link to register. Students who volunteer for 4+ hours during Energy Week will be invited to participate in the breakfast.
