Welcome to the Flowfield Imaging Lab. We are part of the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at The University of Texas at Austin. We do experimental research in the primary areas of hypersonics, high-temperature gas dynamics, turbulence, combustion and laser measurement techniques. The lab is located at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus, which is about 8 miles north of the main campus. This link will take you to the GPS coordinates for the lab.
The Flowfield Imaging Lab was established in 1993 and since that time over 50 graduate students earned their degrees and 12 post docs have conducted research in the lab. The lab encompasses the High-Speed Wind Tunnel Lab, which has operated continuously since the 1950s. Much of our work emphasizes the application and development of flow-field imaging techniques since such techniques help us to understand the physics of complex turbulent flows. In fact, this is a strong bias of our work — we make measurements to understand flow physics and interactions between the flow and chemistry and/or compressibility.
