Our History and On-Going Projects
Since its founding in 1982, the UT Faculty Women’s Organization has begun, sustained, and implemented various important initiatives that continue to improve the quality of life for faculty and professional staff at the University of Texas at Austin.
FWO is a space where women can socialize, network, and help to further campus equality and quality of life for women working at the university. Some of our activities in the past have included:
social events like a welcome reception and holiday party
educational events like visits to museums, panels, or talks
advocacy like forums with the central administration
Longhorn events like watching women’s basketball or volleyball
The FWO has played a pivotal role in stimulating discussion of problems and their possible solutions, particularly those pertaining to women. Initiatives the FWO has furthered include:
- Onsite child care facilities
- “Stop the Clock” family friendly policies
- Improved representation of women in administrative positions
- Support for the roles of women in traditionally underrepresented fields
- Clarification of promotion and tenure rules
- Improved position for lecturers
If you have ideas about causes you would like to champion contact our chair Joanna Turner to discuss how you can be involved.
COVID19
Due to the pandemic our activities have to be changed to an online environment where possible. Join our listserv facultywomen@utlists.utexas.edu to learn about the events for 2020-2021.
