GISense Lab at ACSP 2025 & Visit to the University of Minnesota

On Oct. 21-26, 2025, GISense Lab members traveled to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to participate in the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) 2025 Annual Conference and to visit colleagues at the University of Minnesota.

Prof. Kang presented the lab’s recent work on urban soundscapes with SounDiT at ACSP, our soundscape-to-image GeoAI framework, and joined the Urban AI Roundtable organized by Prof. Xinyue Ye, contributing perspectives on Human-centered GeoAI and the role of multimodal AI in urban planning.

Ph.D. student Xihan Yao presented his earlier research on urban trees and LiDAR-based microclimate modeling, showcasing how high-resolution 3D data can inform greener and more climate-resilient urban design.

The GISense Lab also visited the Department of Geography, Environment & Society at the University of Minnesota, hosted by Prof. Di Zhu, and the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, hosted by Prof. Yao-Yi Chiang. We had fruitful conversations with members of the GeoDI Lab and the Knowledge Computing Lab.

First GISense Lab Group Meeting!

On February 7, 2025, we officially launched the first GISense Lab group meeting at the WCP 4.160, the newly renovated space! It marks the beginning of an exciting journey for our GISense lab as we build a collaborative research environment at the intersection of GIScience, Geospatial Data Science, and GeoAI.

We welcomed our new visiting Ph.D. student Koichi Ito from the National University of Singapore. Two Ph.D. students Hanqi Li and Haofeng Tan joined remotely. Two undergraduates Mathis and Albert attended the in-person meeting.

Looking forward, the GISense Lab will hold regular group meetings to brainstorm new ideas, discuss progress, facilitate research collaborations, and support professional growth.
