Student Government Looking for Feedback on Student-Only Tailgating Space

Hi LAHers!

I hope this quick news update finds you well and eager to return to the Forty Acres for a great upcoming year. Student Government has been hard at work all summer coming up with ways to make help students at U.T. I have been in contact with (President) Thor Lund and (Vice President) Wills Brown throughout the summer and the dynamic duo has a number of new, great ideas to present to the Assembly and to the student body.

The most pressing issue—in terms of time—is the creation of a student-only tailgating space near DKR-Memorial Stadium for game day. Currently, the university does not have a place for tailgating just for students. I am excited by the idea and I hope you are, too!

The football season is almost upon us and the first game is just days after classes begin. It would be great to have this in place for the first game. Student Government is looking for feedback from students regarding the student-only tailgating space. Please contact me via email (joshdfuller@yahoo.com), phone (214-808-0695), or Twitter (follow and tweet at us at @CoLAReps) to let me know what you think. I would love to hear from you!

Hook ‘em!

Best,

Josh Fuller

Sign Up for a LAH Bike Ride/Walk or Rousseau Reading Group

We’ve given the first year LAHers a chance to sign up for a Reading Group or a Bike Ride/Walk this fall, but we have some open spaces. So now we are opening up our remaining seats to current LAHers.

The LAH Rousseau’s Reading Groups are lead by upper-class LAHers. You’ll meet very informally during the first few weeks of class to just hang out and talk about the book. You will need to provide your own book, though. Sign up for a Rousseau’s Reading Group here.

The LAH Bike Rides will take place on Monday, August 27th and depart from the LAH office. Upper class LAHers will lead you to favorite places in Austin within easy biking distance. If you want to ride and won’t have a bike on campus, let me know and I will try to borrow bikes from Orange Bike Project or even loan you one of mine. Or, if biking is not your thing, we have two exciting walks for you to choose from! Everyone will meet back at LAH for ice cream. Sign up for the bike rides or walk here.

Please join us in ringing in the fall 2012 semester.  We’re looking forward to seeing you all back on campus.

Spanish Speakers Needed for Research Project

Dr. Su Yeong Kim, a faculty member in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences, College of Natural Sciences, is conducting a research study on Mexican American children and families. Our goal is to understand how children who translate between Spanish and English for their English-limited speaking parents affects children’s academic and socio-emotional development.  We are seeking undergraduate research assistants to recruit families over the phone and interview families in-person. We seek students with strong Spanish language skills to be research assistants in our project. Students can receive course credit through HDF 355, a research practicum course, for their work on the project.  Non-HDF majors can use HDF 355 as an elective course for their degree plan. We are seeking interviewers for Fall 2012 and beyond. Students with strong Spanish language skills can email Dr. Kim at sykim@prc.utexas.edu for more information.

Thank you,

Su Yeong Kim, Ph.D.
