Study Abroad Planning Scholarships

The Study Abroad Office is very pleased to announce that our PLANNING SCHOLARSHIPS website and application form is now available.

Key Features:

·         Deadline: December 11, 2012

·         Award Period: Funding can be applied to programs between fall 2013 and summer 2015

·         Award Amounts: $2000 – $3000 per student

Planning scholarships have been developed to encourage students to apply for funding in advance of selecting a program. We have designed these scholarships in this way so that students have the guarantee of funding before having to select and/or commit to a program.

Liberal Arts Merit, Research, and Study Abroad Scholarships!

Applications are now being accepted for merit-based, research and study abroad scholarships for fall 2012.

Event for UT Honors Students, plus book giveaway

On Thursday, October 18th, at 7 p.m., former U.S. Congressman Mickey Edwards will visit the Joynes Reading Room to discuss the current election and his new book, entitled The Parties Versus The People: How to Turn Republicans and Democrats into Americans. Edwards represented Oklahoma’s 5th District in the U.S. House of Representatives for 16 years, and served on the Budget and Appropriations Committees. He is now director of the Aspen Institute, a nonpartisan think tank. He has taught graduate courses on politics and government at Harvard, Princeton, and George Washington University. A limited number of copies of The Parties Versus The People are available for free to honors students who commit to attend his talk in the Joynes Room on the 18th. To claim a free copy of the book, inquire in person at the front desk of the Joynes Reading Room (CRD 007). Apply to be an Orientation Advisor

New Student Services is seeking a diverse group of talented students to develop, plan, and execute the 2013 Summer Orientation program and we need your help!

Any student who is looking for a fun and rewarding leadership opportunity, working with a diverse and socially conscious group of campus leaders, should consider applying to become an Orientation Advisor (OA). OAs are important representatives for all incoming students – they are among the first people new students and families meet!

Interested students must attend one of the following information sessions next week inorder to obtain an online application:

•   Tuesday, October 9- 8:30 – 9:30 p.m., Student Services Building (SSB) G1.310

•   Wednesday, October 10-  5:30 – 6:30 p.m., North Office Building A (NOA) 1.126

•   Sunday, October 14- 8:30 – 9:30 p.m., Jester Auditorium (JES) A121A

If you are unable to attend one of the above meetings, please contact New Student Services (512-471-3304) to set an appointment between Monday, October 15 – Friday, October 19, 2012, to obtain an application. Complete applications are due by Wednesday, October, 24 at 4pm.

Graduate Planning Workshops

Next week the Center for Strategic Advising and Career Counseling will be offering two workshops on graduate school planning. The first one will be offered on Monday Oct 8th and will be an overview of the application process to address topics such as GRE, financial aid, and application materials. The second presentation is on Wednesday Oct 10th and will focus on writing a strong personal statement. Both events are in JES A115, 5:00-6:00pm. LAHers are invited to attend a meet/greet and Q & A with Andre Kovensky,  the founder and managing partner of Octavia Investments LLC, a global macro oriented investor in public and private securities and assets. Previously, he was the COO and CFO of PGM Holdings, a publicly traded company in Japan. He also spent three years leading corporate buyouts for Lone Star Funds in Tokyo, as well as 10 years as an investment banker, the majority of which with Citigroup based in the San Francisco Bay Area focused on technology companies. Andre received his MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School and a BA  in Humanities from the University of Texas at Austin.
