Study Archaeology in Portugal

Portugal Archaeology Program: The Bagunte Project
The Bagunte Project is a summer archaeological program directed by UT professor Dr. Mariah Wade. The program is hosted by the Town of Vila do Conde and its Archaeology Department. This seaside town of white sandy beaches was an important Roman outpost, which evolved into a fully modern city while still preserving its historical monuments and buildings. It also was an important monastic center during the Middle Ages and a major shipbuilding and trade center during the Age of Discoveries in the 15th century.
The field archaeology program gives students hands-on excavation and analysis experience as well as contact with local artisans deeply involved in reviving ancient cultural traditions.
The 2018 program will run from May 21 to July 7. Participants enroll in ANT 662 Field Archaeology, earning 6 hours of upper-division ANT credit. This course carries the Ethics & Leadership and Global Cultures flags.
There is no prerequisite, and all students in good academic and disciplinary standing are invited to apply! Scholarship funds and other financial aid are available.
Interested students should contact Dr. Wade directly at m.wade@austin.utexas.edu.
