University Writing Center Open House

Next Wednesday the UWC will host its annual Open House. This is an opportunity for students to learn what it’s like to work at the UWC and ask questions about the consultant training course, RHE368C: Writing Center Internship. We’ll meet in the UWC (PCL 2.330) from 4:30-6. Pizza will be served.

We’d love to have lots of LAH students in attendance. We have several currently working for us, and they’re wonderful consultants.

All undergrad researchers at The University of Texas at Austin are invited to submit a 2-minute research video and compete for $5,000 in the Texas Student Research Showdown.

In this annual video competition, student researchers create two-minute videos about their research, which are voted on by UT students and judged by a faculty panel. The judges’ top videos receive prizes recognizing their excellence in research communication — $2,500$1,000, and $500 for the top three. In addition, students may choose to compete in an “audience choice” competition, with a $1,000 prize for the winner. With larger awards and a simplified format, there’s never been a better year to enter!

Submissions are due Oct. 15, and winners will be announced at a reception Nov. 14.

Why should I enter?
Student researchers are rarely trained to communicate effectively about their work in terms of its relevance, but throughout their careers they’ll have to be able to talk to non-experts about why their research is important. We want to help UT’s top students explain their discoveries—and tell their stories as researchers—to this general audience.

Who can enter?
The Showdown is open to any UT undergraduate involved in research or creative activity in any major. Your work can be an independent project or a collaboration with a professor or lab to which you have made substantive contributions. Even if your project is still in progress, we encourage you to consider a submission.

What are the 2018 deadlines?

  • September 17: Video submissions open
  • October 15: Video submissions close
  • October 17: Voting opens
  • November 2: Voting ends
  • November 14: Winners announced at reception

To enter, read the full rules and submit your information through our online form.

“Alternative Breaks” Opportunity

Alternative Breaks (AB) is a program within the Longhorn Center for Community Engagement that sends small groups of UT students to different cities around the United Stated to help individuals grow as leaders and learn about social justice issues through an immersive service experience.

Alternative Breaks is great for students who are passionate or interested in learning more about social justice. These students will spend their spring break learning and giving back to various communities.

The program also encourages and leads service projects year-round with participants in order to learn more about and give back to their communities.

This year, AB will serve three communities facing the issues of:

–       Immigration Reform (McAllen, TX)

–       Systemic Racism (New Orleans, LA)

–       Community Voice in the Wave of Gentrification (Houston, TX)

We are currently looking for students who may be interested in participating on the trip- as well as leaders to guide the planned trips. Leaders are not required to have prior AB experience.
