Women in Academia Panel

On Tuesday November 6th the Senate of College Council’s Faculty Affairs committee will host “Women in Academia Panel”. At the event panelists will be discussing what it means to be a woman in academia, how being a woman has impacted their professional lives, as well as many other things. The event is completely free to attend! There will also be Tiff’s Treats and giveaways.

Diverse Voices Speaker Series

You are invited to attend the inaugural event of the Diverse Voices speaker series! Liberal Arts Honors Program and the Liberal Arts Honors Diversity Action Committee are co-hosting a speaker series that will showcase UT scholars of different academic disciplines whose work is leading to greater inclusivity and diversity. This year’s theme is: Making UT More Inclusive.  Come hear about faculty efforts and learn how you can participate in making our campus and your studies more inclusive.

Our first speaker is Ann Cvetkovich, Director of LGBTQ Studies Program and Ellen Clayton Garwood Centennial Professor of English and Women’s and Gender Studies. A renowned scholar of queer and feminist theory, Dr. Cvetkovich’s publications include Mixed Feelings:  Feminism, Mass Culture, and Victorian Sensationalism (Rutgers, 1992); An Archive of Feelings:  Trauma, Sexuality, and Lesbian Public Cultures (Duke, 2003); and Depression:  A Public Feeling (Duke, 2012). Her recent work has centered on lesbian archives, activism, depression, and trauma.

Paid LAH Undergraduate Research Fellows

The Liberal Arts Honors Program is seeking students to serve as Undergraduate Research Fellows for LAH 112: The Nature of Inquiry in Spring 2019. The course will meet Wednesdays 2-3pm. Fellows will work with the Associate Director, Dr. Pikus, and her graduate assistant, Christina Villarreal, in the development of assignments, rubrics and activities for the course. In addition, fellows will be responsible for scoring and providing feedback on approximately seven assignments and will meet individually with their assigned group of 12-15 students. Applicants should meet one or more of the following criteria: 1) completed a research methods course by the beginning of Spring 2019; 2) conducted independent research under the supervision of a faculty or staff member; 3) worked on a faculty-led research project; or 4) be currently working on a honors thesis. The fellows will be paid $750 over the course of the semester for their work in the course. In addition, in recognition of their outstanding academic and research accomplishments, fellows will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.  Please note that undergraduates who will be working for LAH in Spring 2019 in another capacity are ineligible for this position. Interested students should submit their resume, a short letter of interest (maximum of 500 words), and a list of two references to Dr. Pikus at mpikus@austin.utexas.edu by Friday, November 2, 2018.

Dear Liberal Arts Major,

The Department of Economics invites you to attend the Liberal Arts in Business Career Forum to be held on Friday, November 2nd, 2018 from 1:15-3:45pm in Glickman Conference Center (RLP). The forum is free to attend for UT COLA students but seating is limited! Please RSVP here.  Business attire is required (see examples here)

The event will feature panel sessions and will give students a chance to learn how past UT students navigated into their careers and ask questions about specific industries. Individual professional networking is encouraged between panel sessions and at the coffee break.  Students who RSVP will be emailed a schedule prior to the event date.

Queer Voices: Coming Out Stories and Questions

Thinking about coming out (for the first time or again), not coming out, or rethinking “coming out”? Wondering what folks’ experiences have been? Join us in the Gender and Sexuality Center for a round table discussion with folks who have gone through/are going through it, tips, and a chance to ask questions to help you make the best decision for you. Come share your experiences with others and learn from each other about how to deal with all sorts of ways (and times) we might come-out. There will be some awesome Halloween snacks & treats.

Portuguese for Spanish Speakers

Are you interested in learning Portuguese but don’t know where to start?  Join us for a free, fun, interactive workshop to start speaking Portuguese over Brazilian snacks. We will also briefly discuss opportunities on campus to study Portuguese and the upcoming competition for the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship, which covers tuition costs and provides a stipend for living expenses. Guides of Texas Application

We are excited to announce that the Visitor Center is recruiting students to join “The Guides of Texas,” our tour guide program. We will select new Guides to start this spring and/or summer, and we hope you can help us in our recruitment efforts!

The Guides of Texas give campus tours to prospective students and assist at recruitment events. The Guides are often the first UT students that guests will meet when visiting campus.You can learn more about The Guides of Texas through our recruitment video!

LAH Social Media Intern Position Open

Your creative ideas and communication skills are needed to build the LAH community!  The social media team has an opening for a photographer/videographer starting this fall (to get training) and continuing into the Spring 2019 semester.  This position will work closely with the other social media team members and with Linda Mayhew.  We’ll have a weekly meeting to plan each week’s postings and strategize.  The Position will be paid $11/hr.

Photographer/Videographer:  film and edit weekly videos for LAH YouTube channel.  Take photos as needed at LAH events for social media.   5 – 9 hours per week.

Writing Center Workshops

Please join LAH and the University Writing Center for the first of four interactive writing workshops on Wednesday, October 17th. Faculty and staff from LAH and UWC will work with students to identify counterarguments and address them in their academic writing. All LAH students are invited to participate. Attending these writing workshops will help students prepare for final essays, research papers, and improve their writing more generally.  See the attached flier for more information.
