Create Your Dream Job: Entrepreneurship vs. Intrapreneurship – | Thursday November 3 | 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm | FAC 18 Library

Join JD Weinstein with Capital Factory, Austin’s entrepreneurial center of gravity, as he discusses tools and skills to take your dream job from an idea to a reality. He’ll discuss techniques to start your own company or create your ideal position within a larger company. We’ll talk about finding the perfect co-founder, fundraising, gaining traction, and taking the ‘entrepreneurial leap!’

This workshop is designed for students who want to learn about entrepreneurship and the Austin startup community.

Eligibility: This event is open to Liberal Arts undergraduate students with BTT Gateway accounts.

“JD Weinstein joined Capital Factory in 2014 as a Venture Associate, where he is responsible for deal sourcing & due diligence for the CF Accelerator & venture fund. Prior to Capital Factory, JD worked with the UT Horizon Fund, the strategic market-driven venture fund for the University of Texas System. He focused on early stage investments in technology, software, communications, digital media, and health care. JD served as University-Wide Representative at the University of Texas at Austin and sponsored the legislation to create the Longhorn Entrepreneurship Agency. Today, he serves as an advisor to LEA and the Freshman Founders’ Program at UT. JD received his BS in Political Communication from The University of Texas at Austin.”

Interns Wanted for Phi Beta Kappa

Build your skills and credentials by publishing with Phi Beta Kappa!

Phi Beta Kappa is seeking college juniors and seniors majoring in the liberal arts or sciences to serve as writing interns. Students must be able to make a five-month commitment to the program and write at least six short articles for The Key Reporter website. 

Looking for Candidates Who:

  • Possess strong writing and editing skills
  • Cover topics with a direct connection to Phi Beta Kappa, its events, and its members
  • Conduct independent research, including interviews
  • Meet deadlines with minimum supervision

Students do not need to be members of Phi Beta Kappa to serve as writing interns, but they must be recommended by the Phi Beta Kappa chapter at their university to be considered for the program.

November 11, 2016: Deadline for chapter recommendations for internships starting January 2017 

April 21, 2017: Deadline for internships starting August 2017

Scholarships for International Students

Spring 2017 scholarship opportunities available from the International Office for international students. All applications are due by November 1st, are open to both graduate and undergraduate international students, and are available for completion online below:

 

•                     Tuition Assistance for Mexican Students (TAMS) – provides a waiver of the nonresident portion of an international student from Mexico’s tuition bill. Eligibility requirements state that you must be a citizen and resident of Mexico who demonstrates financial need. Awards are limited, so the process is competitve and receiving the TAMS is not guaranteed.

 

•                     General ISSS Financial Aid – This $2,500/semester award pays towards the tuition bill and is available to international students with financial need who have completed at least 2 semester at UT.

 

•                     Ethel Loving de Diaz Scholarship – Incoming and current Mexican international students who demonstrate financial need and are working to fund their degree are eligible to apply for this $1,500 award.

 

•                     The Society of Iranian-American Women for Education (SIAWE) Scholarship – a $1,000 award that recognizes a student of Iranian descent who demonstrates financial need and academic excellence. The award can either be applied towards the spring tuition bill or be paid out in cash

This course is now open to non-business majors.

STA 372 5-Financial/Econometric Time Series Modeling

Applied skills course that focuses on statistical forecasting methods used in business. Subjects may include Box-Jenkins models; exponential smoothing models; ARCH/GARCH models for varying volatility in financial returns; seasonal adjustment of time series; tests for non stationarity of time series; and modeling multiple time series. Each subject is illustrated with real data using series such as interest rates and stock returns.

Prerequisites:  Upper-division standing, and Statistics 309 or 309H with a grade of at least C-; Additional prerequisite: Statistics 371G, 371H, 375, or 375H.  Will accept other courses to satisfy prerequisites, but the student must contact Professor Shively directly (see below) for permission to register for this course if they don’t have the ones listed above.

Black Honors Students Association Meetings

Come out to Black Honors Students Association! We will be having a discussion about the experiences of black honors students on campus! BHSA Meetings are every other Thursday and are a great opportunity at UT to meet black honors students! Our goal is to create a sense of community among students of color in honors programs on campus and we would love for you to join in!

Maymester Program “Land Use Issues in Costa Rica” led by Biology Professor Ruth Buskirk.

This program, is particularly useful for students interested in the interdisciplinary intersections of Biology, Ecology, Sustainability, Economics, Conservation, Sociology and Public Policy and is useful for the degree as it grants academic credit for BIO 337 and a Global Cultures Flag.  The prerequisite course for non Plan II students is either BIO 311D or BIO 325H. 

The next information session for the Maymester program is next Monday, Oct. 24th, 4-5pm in BEN 1.102.

Oftentimes, the person at the booth is the same person who will be reading your application down the road! Business casual dress is recommended.

Law school is an important investment in yourself and in your future. Making informed decisions about how to finance that investment will affect your future financial circumstances. It is important to know all your options and to prepare accordingly. This session will focus on understanding the costs of pursuing legal education, describing the financial aid application process, reviewing the available financing options and identifying ways to be financially prepared to achieve your goals. 

ACC 366P ACCOUNTING PRACTICUM

The Department of Accounting is really trying to increase enrollment in ACC 366P – Accounting Practicum, a service learning course in which UT students help low-income families prepare their taxes.  In the coming spring 2017 semester, this course will be available to non-business students through our Enrollment Control Petition (ECP) process.  The online ECP will be open the last week in October for students to submit.  In addition to this video, attached are a number of items to learn more about this course and help promote this incredibly worthwhile opportunity to your students.  Not only do students benefit from the intrinsic rewards associated with giving back to the Austin community, but they can also become certified tax preparers through this experience!
