Global Professional Training: Latin America

Global Professional Training: Latin America is taking place on April 25 – 26, 2020! GPT is a FREE two-day conference on the UT campus for students interested in international affairs, cultural competency, and pursuing international study and career opportunities, focused on Latin America.

We offer workshops for both graduates and undergraduates on intercultural communication, breakout sessions on region-specific topics and programs, a networking event with industry representatives, cultural performances, and ample opportunity to connect with other globally-minded students.

Students who are interested in studying, working, or living in Latin America should find GPT to be a great way to learn more about this vast, diverse, and important region.

Historian Sam Lebovic lecture on Press Freedom

“The Marketplace of Ideas: A Brief (and Unhappy) History of the Press Clause” – A Public Lecture by Historian Sam Lebovic, George Mason University

Sam Lebovic is a Professor of History at George Mason University and author of the book _Free Speech and Unfree News: The Paradox of Press Freedom in America_. In his visit to the Joynes Reading Room, Professor Lebovic will present a public lecture entitled “The Marketplace of Ideas: A Brief (and Unhappy) History of the Press Clause.”

This event is sponsored by the Plan II Honors Program and the BB&T Chair in the Study of Objectivism in the UT Department of Philosophy, and is presented as part of the 2020 First Amendment Scholars Program. College of Liberal Arts Research Week Events

We are now accepting applications for our research poster presentation session that will take place during Research Week on Tuesday, April 21. Students may also apply to showcase their work at the Dean’s Research Reception on Thursday, April 23, where their research will be presented to College directors, chairs, deans, and faculty.

The application can be found on our website. The deadline for students to apply is Friday, March 13.

Visiting poet Evie Shockley in the Joynes Reading Room

Please join us Monday February 10th, in the Joynes Reading Room, for an evening of poetry with Pulitzer Prize finalist Evie Shockley.

Born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, poet Evie Shockley earned a BA at Northwestern University, a JD at the University of Michigan, and a PhD in English literature at Duke University. The author of several collections of poetry, including a half-red sea (2006), the new black (2011), and semiautomatic (2017). Shockley is also the author of the critical volume Renegade Poetics: Black Aesthetics and Formal Innovation in African American Poetry (2011).

Her most recent collection of poetry, semiautomatic (2017), was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, an LATimes Book Prize finalist, and a winner of the 2018 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award in poetry. She teaches Creative Writing and African American Literature at Rutgers University. UT honors students may request a free copy of one of Evie Shockley’s books by inquiring in person at the front desk of the Joynes Reading Room, while supplies last.

First-Gen Faculty Panel

The Recruitment and Retention Committee of the UT Senate of College Councils, along with the Faculty Affairs Committee, has been working to create a First-Gen panel with UT faculty. The panel will take place on Wednesday, February 12th, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm in the WCP North Ballroom 2.410. 

This particular event highlights first-generation faculty and their journey through academia. Students from all academic disciplines across campus will come to hear the stories, and ask questions of First-Gen faculty. We are very excited to launch this new event for First-Generation students to be able to see themselves represented in their UT faculty.

We will have Dean Goldbart of the College of Natural Sciences, Dean Martinez of the College of Education, Dr. Rachelle Chiang of the Public Health Program, and Dr. Kevin Cokley of the Educational Psychology and African and African Diaspora Studies Departments on our panel! We will also be serving pizza, drinks, and Tiff’s Treats!

Humanities Texas Holiday Book Fair

The Humanities Texas Holiday Book Fair is taking place on Saturday, December 7, from 10am–1pm. The book fair will take place at the historic Byrne-Reed House, located at 1410 Rio Grande Street. The event is free and open to the public, with all proceeds from book sales benefitting Texas libraries.

Twenty-three noteworthy authors will visit with the public and sign copies of their latest books, which Humanities Texas will offer for purchase at a discounted price. Available titles include works of fiction and nonfiction, with selections for both adult and youth readers. Free parking will be available in the St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church lot on the northwest corner of 15th and Rio Grande Streets and there will be free coffee and a bake sale of donated and homemade treats.
