LBJ School Open House

It’s not too late to register for LBJ Open House in Austin, Texas on Nov. 14-15. Take a class, meet students, faculty and alumni, and find out how the LBJ School can help you harness your passion and build the future. In fact, Global Policy Studies student Sam Lee said his visit sold him on coming to the school.

 The LBJ Washington Center will also host two November Open Houses and Info Sessions. Meet students and alumni and learn more about the 18-month D.C. Concentration, including its federal policy focus and D.C.-based policy apprenticeships.

University Writing Center Open House

The University Writing Center is hosting our annual open house on October 3, 4-6pm, in PCL 2.330 (the UWC). We hold this event so students who are interested in working at the Writing Center can:

  • learn about RHE368C: Writing Center Internship (the consultant training course)
  • meet current consultants and find out what it’s like to work here
  • enjoy lots of pizza!

Feel free to drop in if you’d like to say “Hi” and learn what’s happening at the UWC.

Liz Carpenter Lectureship with Samantha Power

The 2019 Liz Carpenter Lectureship featuring former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power is on Tuesday, October 1st at 7 pm in the Lady Bird Johnson Auditorium (doors open 6:30 pm).

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power is a leading voice internationally for principled American engagement in the world. One of TIME’s “100 Most Influential People,” she is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, war correspondent, and the Anna Lindh Professor of Practice at Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Law School. Her upcoming book, The Education of an Idealist, will chronicle her years in public service and reflect on the role of human rights and humanitarian ideals in contemporary geopolitics. The first 100 ticketed guests to arrive will receive a free copy of her book.

Peace Corps Application Workshop

For Peace Corps, now is the time for interested seniors to be applying!  There are still seats available for the Application Workshop on Tuesday September 17 from 12:30 – 2 pm at Texas Global at 2400 Nueces St.  Students are asked to register in advance on the Events Page since food will be provided.

Peace Corps are currently recruiting for departures ranging from April to September 2020 with 130 open positions up on our website right now!  This is the perfect time for seniors to get those applications submitted!  Attached a quick overview of the program in addition to a flyer for the workshop.

As a quick reminder, Peace Corps is open to all US Citizens 18 years of age and older.  They cover all cost associated with serving from housing to medical to living allowance while providing an opportunity for students to give back on a global scale.  They also have tons of other benefits including grad school fellowships!

Modernist Networks: The Annette Campbell-White Collection

The Harry Ransom Center is presenting a new exhibit titled Modernist Networks: The Annette Campbell-White Collection! This is a rare opportunity to see letters, books, artifacts, and manuscripts by Modernist writers who defined a literary revolution – Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, T. S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Joseph Conrad, and others – from the private collection of Annette Campbell-White, a pioneering venture capitalist and rare book collector. 

The collection will be on view from now until January 5, 2020 and free docent tours will be offered every day at noon. For more information, visit hrc.utexas.edu

Diverse Voices with Dr. Tatjana Lichtenstein, Friday – March 29th @ Noon

Please mark your calendars for the next Diverse Voices event. Dr. Tatjana Lichtenstein, Director of the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies, will speak on Friday, March 29th @ 12:00 PM at the Julius Glickman Conference Center in RLP 1.302 D.

Dr. Lichtenstein an Associate Professor of History. Dr. Lichtenstein’s research focuses on minorities, nationalism, state-building, war and genocide in Eastern Europe in the twentieth century.  She is the author of  Zionists in Interwar Czechoslovakia: Minority Nationalism and the Politics of Belonging. She currently working on a new book project entitled “Intimacy and Persecution: Jews, Non-Jews, and the Holocaust in the Bohemian Lands.”  It explores the experiences of intermarried Jewish and non-Jewish families during the Second World War. You can learn more about Dr. Lichtenstein’s research here:  https://liberalarts.utexas.edu/history/faculty/tl7994

Joynes Reading Room presents: Philosopher Paul Woodruff

On Wednesday night, February 13th at 7 p.m. in the Joynes Reading Room, Philosopher Paul Woodruff will present Eros Philosophos.

Dr. Woodruff asks, “Will falling in love make you a better philosopher? Plato says yes, but only if you are a very special person. Will falling for philosophy make you a better lover? Same answer from Plato. In my talk I will ask how wisdom and love are connected, discuss Plato’s answer, and suggest my own.”

Woodruff has authored several books of original philosophy and scholarship; and has translated several classical texts, including Plato’s Symposium (with Alexander Nehamas). He served as director of the Plan II Program for 15 years, and was UT Austin’s inaugural Dean of Undergraduate Studies.

This event is free and open to everybody.

Diverse Voices with Dr. Moore – Wednesday, February 13th

Please join LAH and the LAH Diversity Action Committee for our next Diverse Voices event featuring Dr. Leonard Moore on Wednesday, February 13th at 12 PM  at the Julius Glickman Conference Center in RLP 1.302 B.

Dr. Moore is the Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement and the George W. Littlefield Professor of American history. He leads the UT-Austin community in increasing the inclusion of, and investment in, marginalized communities at UT and beyond. He is also focused on equity and access in innovation and entrepreneurship. He has published several books, including Black Rage in New Orleans: Police Brutality and African American Activism from World War II to Hurricane Katrina and

Carl B. Stokes and the Rise of Black Political Power. He will speak on his work to make UT-Austin more inclusive.

LAH Diversity Action Committee Diverse Voices Event

Please join LAH and the LAH Diversity Action Committee for our next Diverse Voices event featuring Dr. Germine H. Awad on Tuesday, January 29th at 12:30 PM at the Julius Glickman Conference Center in RLP 1.302 B.

Dr. Awad is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology and faculty associate in the John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies. Her identity and acculturation research examines prejudice and discrimination toward racial/ethnic minorities, specifically Arab/Middle Eastern American and African Americans, and body image among women of color.

Echo Info Session

Are you interested in literature, art, and photography? Ever wondered what it’s like to  work behind the scenes publishing a magazine? Then Echo is for you! Echo Literary + Arts Magazine is a collection of poetry, prose, art, and photography through the Liberal Arts Honors program. We publish original works by UT undergraduates every spring. Submissions season is almost upon us, and we’re looking for students to join our reading staff!
