Join the John Quincy Adams Society at UT!

The John Quincy Adams Society at UT (JQAS@UT) is a new student organization co-founded by several LAH students. They are a chapter of a nationwide organization that serves to promote restraint and realism in American foreign policy and to foster conversations on campus about where American foreign policy should go. The organization also helps to grow and train professionals in areas of American foreign affairs and has national conferences, scholarships, and essay contests available to its members.

We encourage students of all majors to come to share their ideas at the UT chapter meetings. For more information, email jqas.utaustin@mail.com

Foot in the Door Spring 2020 Auditions

Foot in the Door will be holding auditions for our spring shows this Thursday (1/30) and Friday (1/31) from 7-10pm! We don’t have a location yet because UT’s room reservation system is super backed up, so check the Facebook event or Facebook page for updates on the day of auditions.

This semester, we are performing two student-written plays: The Disappointing Invention of Stella Tartakovsky by Scotty Villhard, and She Could Have Been Great by Anonymous. You can read the role descriptions in the Facebook event for more information about the kinds of parts each show has.

I’ve never auditioned for a Foot in the Door show before. Can I audition? Of course! No experience necessary, and all majors are welcome.

How do auditions work? Show up any time between 7-10pm. Bring a pencil, a water bottle, and your enthusiasm, and be prepared to fill out an audition form with your tentative availability for the semester. We will have scenes for you to read for us, and you don’t need to do any preparation ahead of time. The audition process is supposed to be fun and stress-free, plus it’s a chance to meet your potential future castmates!

Should I come to both audition days? Nope! You only need to come to one of the two days, although you’re welcome to come to both. We’re happy to have you read for as much time as you’re available.

What if I just want to do tech? Come to auditions, and we’ll have a tech form for you to fill out. That’s all you’ll need to do, and then we’ll contact you if we’ve chosen you to tech one of our shows!

Any more questions? Please, feel free to message our Facebook page or reply to this email, and we’ll try to answer any questions you have.

Longhorn Advocate Mentorship Program

Student Government and the Texas Exes Advocacy Department are co-sponsoring the Longhorn Advocate Mentorship Program (LAMP), which pairs a student, alumni, and State Senator from key State Senate Districts in order to foster civic engagement and connect current and former students from the same area of Texas. The goals of the program are to champion policies and issues benefitting UT and higher education, empower student-alumni pairs to tackle higher education policies, and develop relationships with alumni mentors and legislators. We are looking for students from Senate Districts 4, 6, 7, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 30. The application for LAMP can be found here. AURA-Texas Applications

The Office of Undergraduate Research invites all undergraduate researchers across campus to apply for opportunities to gain presentation skills and experiences, and share their work and research experiences with others students. Undergraduates of all majors are encouraged to apply. You can find the application here.

The Academy of Undergraduate Researchers Across Texas is a collaboration between UT’s Office of Undergraduate Research and the LAUNCH office at Texas A&M University. AURA-Texas gives exceptional student researchers the chance to network with counterparts at another institution, attend professional development workshops, and showcase the ways in which their research serves the state of Texas. AURA-Texas students help represent the strength of Texas undergraduate research and its impact on communities of all sizes across the world.

Students are chosen for the AURA-Texas program based on the impact of their research as well as their ability to communicate their work to a general audience. In communicating their projects to new audiences (at internal research events at both A&M and UT, and at external outreach events), students are pushed to consider their work from new points of view as they advocate for the role of students in the research mission of the university.

Each year the Office of Undergraduate Research seeks passionate undergraduates to serve as Student Research Ambassadors — the public face of student research at events for internal and external audiences, where they share their stories of becoming researchers whose experiences combine the teaching and research missions of the university. Students in this program develop their ability to share their research narrative with a general audience.

Ambassadors will be expected to attend a workshop on research narratives in the fall, and to represent student research at the following events:

  • Family Weekend
  • Explore UT
  • One workshop or event related to the Texas Student Research Showdown
  • At least one Research Week activity
  • At least six OUR info sessions or workshops for current students

Other outreach and profiling opportunities include:

  • Tabling
  • FIG visits
  • Social media takeovers
  • A profile of you and your research

In the application, we encourage everyone to choose as many opportunities as they would like and/or have the time to participate in with OUR. While some require more time commitment than others, all are wonderful opportunities to share your research with other undergraduates and gain valuable communication skills and connections with other researchers.
