Philip graduated from UT Austin in 2014 and attended Berkeley Law. After graduation he returned to Texas and worked for several “biglaw” firms in the Houston market before moving to Dallas where he now serves as Vice President of Legal Affairs & Assistant General Counsel for JPMorgan Chase & Co. During his time as an attorney, he’s practiced in both the US and in Europe and has worked on a plethora of international legal matters related to private securities and private investment funds.

Will you be in Austin this summer? Are you interested in volunteering for LAH IN PERSON orientation?  If the answer is yes, sign up on the google doc link to let Stacey know by Wednesday, April 19th.

Summer Orientation is 7 weeks beginning May 30th through July 19th, with a Last summer Orientation August 14-16.

Volunteering entails helping advise incoming LAH freshman with their fall schedules in small groups with Stacey or Linda on Day 2 of orientation. We also need a couple of volunteers to assist with registration the next day (Day 3) from 12:30-2:00 in the LAH Commons room. You don’t have to be available for both days and even the entire summer. We are flexible!

We would like to have at least 4-5 peer advisers throughout the summer for the Small Group advising sessions and Registration assistance.

Hi Allies in Action!

Our students have been working diligently for the past year in the Peers for Pride course to curate a final performance taking place on Thursday, April 13th from 5pm-7pm in WCP Room 2.120.

We would love if you could attend to show support for our students who are promoting messages through theatre around allyship, inclusive LGBTQIA+ communities, intersectionality, and experiences of being queer and trans on a college campus.

Peers for Pride (PfP) is a peer facilitation program of the Gender and Sexuality Center. Students will take two courses during the academic year in partnership with the Center for Women’s Gender Studies.

Learn about queer histories and create queer futures!
Facilitate workshops around allyship with the GSC!
Make new friends & work toward creating thriving LGBTQIA+ communities at UT.

Who Can Apply?
The program and course are open to UT undergraduate and graduate students from all majors and disciplines. Courses will count for a total of six hours of upper-division credit in Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS), Social Work (SW), Theatre and Dance (TD), and Educational Leadership and Policy (ELP). Additionally, students will receive credit for Cultural Diversity in the United States, and Ethics course flag requirements.
No experience in theatre and/or performance is required to apply and participate in the program. After students have completed the program, they are eligible to be invited for a paid opportunity to facilitate any Peers for Pride requested workshop for the campus and/or local Austin community!
Students of the Peers for Pride Program are required to take one class in the fall semester and one in the spring semester in their respective order.

Fall Semester: Confronting LGBTQIA+ Oppression: Exploring the Issues and Learning the Skills to Communicate Them
Learn basic facilitation skills while taking an in-depth look at some issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals.
Spring Semester: Facilitating Dialogues on LGBTQIA+ Oppression: Peers for Pride in Action
Students will continue in the program to become peer facilitators and have the opportunity to fine-tune their facilitation skills and lead workshops across campus. Students must complete the prerequisite course Confronting LGBTQIA+ Oppression: Exploring the Issues and Learning the Skills to Communicate Them to be able to enroll in this course.

The first is our second JapanLab Expo, which will be held on Wednesday, April 19^th from 3:00-4:30 PM in Vislab (POB 2.404A). The expo will feature the work of student teams from this semester. At the expo, you can learn about propaganda through a digitized 1938 board game that celebrates Japan’s invasion of China, walk through the streets of the booming treaty port city of Yokohama in the nineteenth century, and experience the start of Japan’s sixty-year civil war through the eyes of a young provincial warrior in 1335. Feel free to drop in for a few minutes or the whole time to see the projects and talk with the student participants and team leaders.

We are also recruiting students now for our fall semester teams, featuring projects on sumo, censorship, and the Tale of Genji. If you know a student interested in digital humanities, computer programming, graphic design, or Japanese history and culture, we would be grateful if you could forward this opportunity to them. Attached is a list of LAH lower and upper division Fall 2023 course options that are reserved for just for you! We reserve the courses using the LAH ’26’ honors code( (not by EID).

Example: GOVERNMENT/PLAN I HONORS (47526)

Double check to make sure you have the honors code at the end of major. If it’s not there, please let me or Linda know, and we will add it back to your major code.  If the class is open during registration, you should be able to register for it.

There are only a few seats in the lower-division sections, as I need to save most for the incoming LAH Class of 2027. (Exception: SPN 311 most of the seats are available to current LAHers).

If there is a class you are interested in and you don’t get a seat, please try in mid-July or in August, as any remaining seats will be released for all LAH students.

Upper-division LAH courses Tips and Hints:

The upper-division LAH classes are small seminar style classes and can be very competitive. Make sure to have options! To view course descriptions of the LAH Fall 2023 offerings, just go to the Liberal Arts Course Description Database and select LAH.

If the class is cross-listed, it doesn’t matter if you register for the class under LAH or the cross-listing department, it will count towards honors and the department requirements. Example: GOV 370R Money and Politics and LAH 350- Money and Politics will apply towards upper-division honors and GOV.

The GOV department reserves their GOV-honors seats by EID. If you are a GOV major, I would recommend contacting the GOV department, so they can reserve a seat for you. The LAH seats are on a first come-first serve basis.

LAH classes cross-listed with English are extremely competitive. Most of the seats are controlled under the English cross-listing for students pursuing English Honors. There are only a couple of seats under the LAH number. Do not contact the English department for access to register unless you admitted into the English Honors Program.

The LAH 340L, Legal Internships and Law is the only upper-division course that has an additional application to complete.  To be eligible to register for LAH 340L, see LAH course descriptions for more details.

Waitlists for all upper-division LAH classes will be turned on in the morning of Friday, April 14th

LAH Fall 2023 Courses

Purpose of Acta

To enhance leadership knowledge and skills among a small group of first- and second-year students enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts

Activities

• Individual leadership projects supported by the program
• Bi-weekly meetings consisting of discussions on leadership, role-playing games, and conversations with leaders at UT and in the community
• Meetings with mentors in leadership positions
• Dinners with invited speakers

Scholarships

• Students successfully completing the program each semester will receive a $250 scholarship

Application Requirements

• Current first- and second-year students enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts
• Minimum 3.25 GPA at start of program
• Ability to attend meetings on Thursdays from 3-4 pm
• Identified a professional mentor
• Identified a leadership project
