Registration for Spring classes will take place from October 29 to November 29.

LA 325 Coaching

LA 325: Introduction to College/Career Coaching Theory & Practice

Instructor: Dr. Katharine Brooks • Wednesdays 3-6 pm • Location: CLA 1.104 • Unique #: 30003 • Student Eligibility: Liberal Arts major; upper-division status; and 60+ credit hours

Course Description: 

Coaching skills are invaluable in a variety of work settings, and are particularly important for managers and leaders in organizations.  This course focuses on the theories, current research, and techniques of evidence-based coaching systems.  Positive psychology and appreciative inquiry will be the primary approaches, but humanistic, behavioral, and NLP techniques and theory will be discussed as well.  A particular emphasis and focus will be on coaching as it applies to college students.

The class structure will be a combination of lecture/discussion, in-class exercises and activities, and practice sessions where you will apply the theories you are learning. During each class you will also complete worksheets and other activities designed to further your knowledge and understanding of the subject matter as well as develop your own academic and career goals. Your performance will be assessed through take-home tests, class worksheets/activities, and a final paper.

By completing this course you will be well-prepared to apply your coaching skills to your chosen career path.  You may also apply your skills and knowledge to various student leadership roles (TA’s, peer mentors, tutoring, etc.) you currently hold or hope to attain.

The course instructor, Dr. Brooks, is a board certified coach, licensed professional counselor, and nationally certified counselor.  She teaches coaching courses to professionals in the career services field through the National Association of Colleges & Employers.

LAC Study Abroad Scholarship

The Fall Liberal Arts Council Study Abroad Scholarship is offered to Liberal Arts students who are studying abroad in Spring 2013.

Restrictions: Minimum 2.75 GPA and 15 hours in residence

Study Abroad Planning Scholarships

Key Features:

·         Deadline: December 11, 2012

·         Award Period: Funding can be applied to programs between fall 2013 and summer 2015

·         Award Amounts: $2000 – $3000 per student

Planning scholarships have been developed to encourage students to apply for funding in advance of selecting a program. We have designed these scholarships in this way so that students have the guarantee of funding before having to select and/or commit to a program.

On Thursday, October 18th, at 7 p.m., former U.S. Congressman Mickey Edwards will visit the Joynes Reading Room to discuss the current election and his new book, entitled The Parties Versus The People: How to Turn Republicans and Democrats into Americans. Edwards represented Oklahoma’s 5th District in the U.S. House of Representatives for 16 years, and served on the Budget and Appropriations Committees. He is now director of the Aspen Institute, a nonpartisan think tank. He has taught graduate courses on politics and government at Harvard, Princeton, and George Washington University. A limited number of copies of The Parties Versus The People are available for free to honors students who commit to attend his talk in the Joynes Room on the 18th. To claim a free copy of the book, inquire in person at the front desk of the Joynes Reading Room (CRD 007). New Student Services is seeking a diverse group of talented students to develop, plan, and execute the 2013 Summer Orientation program and we need your help!

Any student who is looking for a fun and rewarding leadership opportunity, working with a diverse and socially conscious group of campus leaders, should consider applying to become an Orientation Advisor (OA). OAs are important representatives for all incoming students – they are among the first people new students and families meet!
