Teresa Lozano Long Undergraduate Travel Scholarship

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies is now offering a number of travel scholarships to Liberal Arts majors for study abroad in Latin America, both for summer 2022 and for academic year 2022-2023.  For summer 2022, they are offering $2,500 travel scholarships.  Students must attend degree-granting institutions in Latin America this coming summer for a summer session and return with at least six hours of college credit.  For academic year 2022-2023, they will award $5,000 travel scholarships for semester-long study abroad in Latin America.  Awardees must attend degree-granting institutions in Latin America and return with at least 12 hours of college credit.  These awards are merit-based.

National Scholarships and Fellowships 101

February 15, 2022 at 2pm via Zoom

This virtual session is an introduction to national post-baccalaureate scholarships and fellowships, such as the Rhodes, Marshall, and Truman. It will cover the four W’s: What are nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships? Who is eligible to apply? Why you should consider applying? And when do you apply?

This session is most appropriate for academically strong students who do not know, or have limited knowledge, about these opportunities and the Office of Distinguished and Postgraduate Scholarships (ODPS). Click here to register.

Writing for Competitive Scholarships Workshop

Conducted by UT’s Office of Distinguished and Postgraduate Scholarships, this workshop will center on all aspects of the application process for competitive scholarships such as the Rhodes and Marshall. Participants will learn how to identify their mission and relate their career goals in clear and persuasive language.

The workshop consists of three sessions over three consecutive weeks, and will be offered at different dates and times across the semester. (All meetings will be on Zoom.) Scheduling options are listed on the application. There is no charge for this workshop, and no need to purchase materials.

Academic Improvement Scholarship Opportunity

The Senate of College Councils is offering two to three $500 Academic Improvement Scholarships to current undergraduate students who have shown significant academic improvement during college. Eligible applicants must have had a semester with a GPA lower than 2.75 and improved their GPA by at least 0.5 grade points in the coming semesters.

McNair Scholars | 2022-23 Application Open

McNair, part of the U.S. Department of Education’s funded TRIO programs, guides first-generation and low-income and/or underrepresented students into Ph.D. programs, and provides funding to assist with that process.  Applications are due 11:59PM, Friday, 31 March, but applicants are encouraged to submit as soon as possible.

 

The Longhorn Center for Academic Equity has several info sessions scheduled, all via Zoom. Interested students can find details about these sessions on the flyer above and on the website. Free Speech Essay Contest

The contest is open exclusively to UT undergraduates, and all undergraduates are eligible. Prizes for the top three essays range from $700-$1500. Deadline for submission is February 28, 2022. 

 The two topics that students may choose this year concern:  Misinformation – Should the Government Allow It? and Speech that Offends – Why Protect It?

Human Trafficking Panel

Texas Sunshines is hosting their bi-annual Human Trafficking Panel at UT Austin on December 4th, 2021 from 2-4pm in JESA121A. The purpose of this panel is to raise awareness about the state of sex trafficking in Texas, how it can be prevented, and how we can help survivors. Speakers at this event include:

Women in STEM

What is WiSTEM?
Women in STEM, is an initiative launched by the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement  (DDCE) in 2021. WiSTEM connects students, educators, and professionals to the worlds of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through recruitment initiatives, supportive structures, and educational services designed to promote the success and advancement of women, girls, and gender minorities in STEM fields. WiSTEM strives to recruit and retain women and gender minority STEM students and to provide a supportive community that encourages the success of women and gender minorities at The University of Texas at Austin. All students are welcome to join in!

WiSTEM Focus
WiSTEM will work to fulfill the critical need to educate and expose students to transdisciplinary, holistic experiences that increase the sense of belonging, STEM identity, and STEM self-efficacy and will engage our university community of over 12,000 current undergraduate and graduate women and gender minority students in STEM majors with career and leadership programming and role model and mentor engagements. Women in STEM (WiSTEM) will also focus on K12 outreach and STEM education reaching 12,000 K12 students plus 12,000 families, educators, and community partners annually.  Initiatives under the WiSTEM umbrella include:

WiSTEM Canvas Community

Each academic year, WiSTEM creates an online community in Canvas. STEM students will be automatically invited to this community and it will appear in your Canvas dashboard once you accept the invitation. This is a really convenient online portal for information, announcements, and opportunities. Take some time to browse Canvas and connect with others in your field of study! The WiSTEM Canvas Community serves as a way to connect students with opportunities, information, and ways to engage in their communities of support. Weekly posts on Mental Health Mondays, Wellness Wednesdays, and Thankful Thursdays serve as regular reminders on the importance of self-care. Anyone can join our community through this link! If you have accepted the invitation and decide you no longer want to be a part of the community, email wistem@utexas.edu to be removed.

MEC Cultural Immersion Experience

The Multicultural Engagement Center is excited to be launching our inaugural Cultural Immersion Experience to New Orleans, LA, March 13-17, 2022. The application consists of biographical information, three short essays, and acknowledgments and is most accessible via iPad or computer. Priority applications are due on December 6th (deadline extended from the flyer) for a discounted program fee. The regular application deadline will be January 14, 2022. Access the application here!

RISE Summit Registration Open!

RISE Summit is a free conference for all first-year students, designed to strengthen leadership skills and develop strategies to succeed throughout your college career!

This year, RISE Summit is going hybrid—featuring a virtual program on Thursday, January 13 from 10 a.m-5 p.m., and an in-person component on Friday, January 21 from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Students will be able to choose between a variety of presentations, workshops, and socials. Students will also have a chance to meet other new Longhorns in special Small Group sessions facilitated by Student Senate representatives. Additionally, all registered participants will receive an exclusive RISE campfire mug. Students will also be entered to win other big-ticket prizes!
