Diverse Voices with Dr. Moore – Wednesday, February 13th

Please join LAH and the LAH Diversity Action Committee for our next Diverse Voices event featuring Dr. Leonard Moore on Wednesday, February 13th at 12 PM  at the Julius Glickman Conference Center in RLP 1.302 B.

Dr. Moore is the Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement and the George W. Littlefield Professor of American history. He leads the UT-Austin community in increasing the inclusion of, and investment in, marginalized communities at UT and beyond. He is also focused on equity and access in innovation and entrepreneurship. He has published several books, including Black Rage in New Orleans: Police Brutality and African American Activism from World War II to Hurricane Katrina and

Carl B. Stokes and the Rise of Black Political Power. He will speak on his work to make UT-Austin more inclusive.

Feedback Writing Workshop!

Join LAH on Tuesday, February 12 for a writing workshop focused on incorporating feedback.

Revising academic writing is often a collaborative process between you and the reviewer. In this interactive workshop, students will learn how to incorporate feedback and respond to comments they receive on written assignments.

Undergraduate Research Journal now accepting submissions!

The University of Texas at Austin Undergraduate Research Journal (Texas URJ) is accepting submissions for the 2019 volume. Every article selected for final publication will appear in the next annual volume of the Undergraduate Research Journal. Each author will also receive a printed version of the full journal.

The new extended deadline for manuscript submission is February 22nd, 2019 at 11:59 pm. Articles will be reviewed on a rolling basis during the Fall semester. All original, research-based submissions from undergraduates are welcome!

Julie Kavanagh, The U.S. Department of State’s Diplomat in Residence for Texas to hold Office Hours for Honors Students

Open to all Honors students in UT Austin’s College of Liberal Arts College.  Drop-in to meet Julie Kavanagh, the Department of State’s Diplomat in Residence for Texas. Ms. Kavanagh is a career diplomat and has been with the Department of State since 1990. She will be available on a drop-in basis to meet students, answer questions about careers in diplomacy, provide information about State Department internships, fellowships, study abroad, and professional opportunities. Drop by to just say hello, introduce yourself, or get your questions answered.

Freeman Stipend for Internships in Asia

The Freeman Stipend for Internships in Asia provides generous awards starting at $2000 to undergraduate and graduate students interning in East and Southeast Asia. Upon their return, recipients complete a project to share their experience with the campus community.

The deadline for the 2019 International Internship Program has been extended for several locations.

The International Internship Program offers students the opportunity to explore their field in another country, gain professional experience, and build their professional networks. Interns work full-time under the guidance of an English-speaking supervisor in placements customized to the student’s field and professional goals.

2019 call for applications: Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program

If you aspire to conduct independent research, to pursue doctoral study, and to contribute to diversity at institutions of higher learning, you are encouraged to apply to the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program. The MMUF Program is a doctoral preparatory program that offers a concrete mentoring plan and financial support to rising sophomore and junior students who will pursue academic research in Mellon-approved fields. The fundamental objective of MMUF is to increase diversity amongst faculty in U.S. universities and colleges, as well demonstrate a commitment to eradicating social, educational, and economic disparities.

LAH Info Session Ambassadors Needed!

Stacey needs a few LAHers to volunteer to serve as LAH Student Ambassadors to meet and greet prospective students and their families at the LAH Information Sessions this spring semester.

Your responsibilities would be to speak with guests about your experiences in LAH, UT, dorm life, etc..  basically everything about being a student at UT and in LAH. The sessions begin Friday, February 1st from 10:00-12:00 (the first hour is with students and parents, the second hour just with parents)  in the LAH  Commons Room and run every Monday and Friday until April 29th (no sessions during Spring Break).   If you can make it for both Mondays and Fridays great! If not, that’s ok as long as there are other student representatives.  You can also sign up for the first hour 10:00-10:00  or 11:00-12:00 or stay for both hours.

Call for Study Abroad Scholarship Application!

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies is now offering a number of travel scholarships to Liberal Arts majors for study abroad in Latin America, both for summer 2019 and for the academic year 2019-2020.  For summer 2019, we are offering ten $2,500 travel scholarships.  Students must attend degree-granting institutions in Latin America this coming summer for a summer session and return with at least six hours of college credit.  For the academic year 2019-2020, we will award six $5,000 travel scholarships for semester-long study abroad in Latin America.  Awardees must attend degree-granting institutions in Latin America and return with at least 12 hours of college credit.  These awards are merit-based.

European Studies’ FLAS Deadline Extended: Feb 1!

The Center for European Studies announces that the FLAS fellowship application deadline has been extended until 5:00pm, Friday, February 1, 2019. Letters of recommendation will be due by 5:00pm Friday, February 8, 2019.

Summer FLAS awards for language study cover $5,000 in tuition and fees, plus a $2,500 stipend for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Academic year FLAS fellowships provide undergraduate students up to $10,000 for tuition and course-related fees plus a $5,000 stipend.

FLAS languages funded by European Studies (CES) and the Department of Education include Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Iberian), Romanian, Serbian, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian, Yiddish, and more! For more information please visit CES’undergraduate FLAS pages to apply!
