Your creative ideas and communication skills are needed to build the LAH community!  The social media team has an opening for a photographer/videographer starting this fall (to get training) and continuing into the Spring 2019 semester.  This position will work closely with the other social media team members and with Linda Mayhew.  We’ll have a weekly meeting to plan each week’s postings and strategize.  The Position will be paid $11/hr.

Photographer/Videographer:  film and edit weekly videos for LAH YouTube channel.  Take photos as needed at LAH events for social media.   5 – 9 hours per week.

Please join LAH and the University Writing Center for the first of four interactive writing workshops on Wednesday, October 17th. Faculty and staff from LAH and UWC will work with students to identify counterarguments and address them in their academic writing. All LAH students are invited to participate. Attending these writing workshops will help students prepare for final essays, research papers, and improve their writing more generally.  See the attached flier for more information.

• Tuition Assistance for Mexican Students (TAMS) – provides a waiver of the nonresident portion of an international student from Mexico’s tuition bill. Eligibility requirements state that you must be a citizen and resident of Mexico who demonstrates financial need. Awards are limited, so the process is competitive and receiving the TAMS is not guaranteed.
• General ISSS Financial Aid – This $3,500/long semester ($2,500 for summer) cash award available to international students with financial need who have completed at least 2 semester at UT.
• Ethel Loving de Diaz Scholarship – Incoming and current Mexican international students who demonstrate financial need and are working to fund their degree are eligible to apply for this $1,500 spring tuition award.
• The Society of Iranian-American Women for Education (SIAWE) Scholarship – a $1,000 spring award that recognizes a student of Iranian descent who demonstrates financial need and academic excellence. The award can either be applied towards the spring tuition bill or be paid out in cash.

If interested in spending part of your summer getting hands-on field experience in archaeology, the Department of Anthropology will be offering two amazing opportunities in Summer 2019. The Programme for Belize Archaeological Project focuses on Maya archaeology near the Belizean borders of Guatemala and Mexico while the the Bagunte Project analyzes material from the Late Bronze Age to the Roman colonization of a coastal site in northern Portugal. Interested students are strongly encouraged to attend one of the following info sessions:

On Monday, October 15th at 7 p.m., the Joynes Reading Room will host a reading and Q&A with visiting novelist Leni Zumas. Based in Portland, Zumas is the author of Red Clocks, which was a New York Times Editor’s Choice, a Time Magazine Best Book of 2018, and an Amazon Book of the Month, among other accolades. “This provocative exploration of female longing, frustration and determination couldn’t be more timely, yet there’s nothing fleeting about it,” wrote critic Ron Charles in the Washington Post. The Joynes Reading Room has purchased several copies of Red Clocks, as well as some of her previous books, which will be given away on a first-come basis to students who inquire in person at the front desk of the Joynes Reading Room (CRD 007). Leadership Education and Progress (LEAP) is a free foundational leadership development program open to all students at The University of Texas at Austin. LEAP provides participants the opportunity for self-exploration, and will help reframe the idea of leadership as a process, rather than a position. Additionally, participants will engage with a community to share, discuss, and reflect on a broad range of topics.

LEAP meets once a week for six weeks. In the Fall 2018 semester, there will be four session options are available to participants:

Orange Cohort: **No longer accepting participants
Mondays from 3:30-5 p.m. – 9/10-10/15
Tuesdays from 5-6:30 p.m. – 9/11-10/16

White Cohort:
Mondays from 3:30-5pm – 10/22-12/3 (no session on 11/19)
Tuesdays from 5-6:30pm – 10/23-12/4 (no session on 11/20)

The LEAP Program culminates on Friday, December 7 with a graduation celebration for all four cohorts. In order to graduate as an Exemplary Leader, you must attend all six sessions. Advanced Leaders must attend 3-5 sessions.

New Student Services is recruiting Orientation Advisors (OAs) for the 2019 orientation season!

OAs support and mentor new freshman and transfer students as they transition to The University of Texas at Austin and are among the first people new students and families meet when they come to campus. To prepare for this critical role, OAs receive extensive leadership training that serves them throughout their time at UT and beyond. They also learn valuable academic advising skills, write and perform in productions, develop creative media, plan large-scale events and much more.

If you are interested in being an OA, please attend one of the six information sessions from Oct. 9-22 at varying locations and times. Students from any college and classification are eligible to become an Orientation Advisor.
