Paid Undergraduate Research Fellows – Deadline Extended

The deadline for applications for Undergraduate Research Fellows in LAH 112: The Nature of Inquiry in Spring 2019 to Thursday, November 8th. The course will meet Wednesdays 2-3pm. Fellows will work with the Associate Director, Dr. Pikus, and her graduate assistant, Christina Villarreal, in the development of assignments, rubrics and activities for the course. In addition, fellows will be responsible for scoring and providing feedback on approximately seven assignments and will meet individually with their assigned group of 12-15 students. Applicants should meet one or more of the following criteria: 1) completed a research methods course by the beginning of Spring 2019; 2) conducted independent research under the supervision of a faculty or staff member; 3) worked on a faculty-led research project; or 4) be currently working on a honors thesis. The fellows will be paid $750 over the course of the semester for their work in the course. In addition, in recognition of their outstanding academic and research accomplishments, fellows will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.  Please note that undergraduates who will be working for LAH in Spring 2019 in another capacity are ineligible for this position. Volunteer at the Harry Ransom Center

The Harry Ransom Center is currently seeking volunteers to work with the public at the visitor desk, at special events, and as docents from January through December 2018. Descriptions of the positions are online at www.hrc.utexas.edu/about/participate/volunteer/.  

These public outreach volunteers ensure all visitors have a positive and enjoyable experience at the Ransom Center, and they also gain a behind-the-scenes perspective into a world-renowned humanities research library and museum. 

We encourage applications from any individual (student, staff, graduate student, community member) with strong communication and customer service skills, who listens well and is comfortable interacting with the public. We would greatly appreciate your help in sharing these volunteer opportunities with anyone who may be interested. Applications are due December 1, 2018.

Women in Academia Panel

On Tuesday November 6th the Senate of College Council’s Faculty Affairs committee will host “Women in Academia Panel”. At the event panelists will be discussing what it means to be a woman in academia, how being a woman has impacted their professional lives, as well as many other things. The event is completely free to attend! There will also be Tiff’s Treats and giveaways.

Diverse Voices Speaker Series

You are invited to attend the inaugural event of the Diverse Voices speaker series! Liberal Arts Honors Program and the Liberal Arts Honors Diversity Action Committee are co-hosting a speaker series that will showcase UT scholars of different academic disciplines whose work is leading to greater inclusivity and diversity. This year’s theme is: Making UT More Inclusive.  Come hear about faculty efforts and learn how you can participate in making our campus and your studies more inclusive.

Our first speaker is Ann Cvetkovich, Director of LGBTQ Studies Program and Ellen Clayton Garwood Centennial Professor of English and Women’s and Gender Studies. A renowned scholar of queer and feminist theory, Dr. Cvetkovich’s publications include Mixed Feelings:  Feminism, Mass Culture, and Victorian Sensationalism (Rutgers, 1992); An Archive of Feelings:  Trauma, Sexuality, and Lesbian Public Cultures (Duke, 2003); and Depression:  A Public Feeling (Duke, 2012). Her recent work has centered on lesbian archives, activism, depression, and trauma.

The Department of Economics invites you to attend the Liberal Arts in Business Career Forum to be held on Friday, November 2nd, 2018 from 1:15-3:45pm in Glickman Conference Center (RLP). The forum is free to attend for UT COLA students but seating is limited! Please RSVP here.  Business attire is required (see examples here)

The event will feature panel sessions and will give students a chance to learn how past UT students navigated into their careers and ask questions about specific industries. Individual professional networking is encouraged between panel sessions and at the coffee break.  Students who RSVP will be emailed a schedule prior to the event date.

Queer Voices: Coming Out Stories and Questions

Thinking about coming out (for the first time or again), not coming out, or rethinking “coming out”? Wondering what folks’ experiences have been? Join us in the Gender and Sexuality Center for a round table discussion with folks who have gone through/are going through it, tips, and a chance to ask questions to help you make the best decision for you. Come share your experiences with others and learn from each other about how to deal with all sorts of ways (and times) we might come-out. There will be some awesome Halloween snacks & treats.
