“The Guides of Texas” Recruitment

The Guides of Texas are currently recruiting for summer 2018

Ambassadors give campus tours to prospective students, assist the UT Visitor Center in its daily operations, serve as staff at major campus recruiting events and support athletics with their recruitment efforts. Ambassadors are often the first UT students that guests will meet when visiting campus.

2018 Lavender Graduation

Please save the date for 2018 Lavender Graduation. Lavender Graduation is a special graduation ceremony that honors the achievements of graduating LGBTQA+ students on campus. This year’s keynote will be Sebastián J. Colón-Otero, LCSW Diversity Coordinator-Latinx Community Liaison, Counseling and Mental Health Center.

The ceremony will be Wednesday, May 16th 4pm, SAC Ballroom & the reception & LGBTQ+ Alumni Celebration will immediately follow in the Connally Balloroom of the Etter Harbin Alumni Center

INSPIRE is a three-year program (sophomore to senior) that encourages undergraduates to think not only about their own future, but also about the future of their communities and what tools are necessary for social change.

Four primary criteria guide the competitive selection process:

• Individual leadership potential;
• Maturity, the ability to deal with challenges, and the capacity to reflect on one’s own personal strengths and weaknesses;
• Special interests, unique characteristics and/or diverse experiences, which contribute to the INSPIRE program;
• Willingness to commit to three years of the program.

Meet Writer Sarah Manguso

Writer and poet Sarah Manguso will be visiting the Joynes Reading Room on April 10th at 7 pm. She is the author of the nonfiction books 300 Arguments, Ongoingness, The Guardians, and The Two Kinds of Decay; the story collection Hard to Admit and Harder to Escape; and the poetry collections Sister Viator and The Captain Lands in Paradise. Her books have been translated into five languages, and her work has been supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Hodder Fellowship, and the Rome Prize. She lives in Los Angeles and currently teaches at CalArts.

There are copies of her books available for free in the Joynes Reading Room, but supplies are limited so please pick up your copy soon.

Intellectual Entrepreneurship Class and Award

Are you thinking about whether graduate school is in your future?  Are you uncertain about what it would be like to be a graduate student and what academic program may be suited best to your interests and career goals?

If your answer to these questions is yes, you may wish to consider undertaking the Intellectual Entrepreneurship (IE) “Pre-Graduate School Internship.”  This internship is open to students in all UT colleges/schools and departments.  You may earn one, two or three hours of academic credit (CMS 164M/264M/364M) by participating in the internship.

 You may also be eligible for a Kuhn Intellectual Entrepreneurship Award.  This award is designed to encourage both first generation and economically disadvantaged undergraduate students to pursue their academic passions and to seriously consider graduate study.

The awards will be in the form of $1,000 stipends offered to a select number of qualified undergraduate interns. The award is intended to support and encourage students to pursue opportunities that further enrich the Pre-Graduate School Internship experience. (e.g., traveling to conferences, potential graduate school visits, research endeavors, supplies, books etc.)

In addition, each intern’s graduate mentor will be awarded a matching $1,000 stipend through the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement.  For more information about this award, please go to:

Registration for Summer and Fall, Advising Appointments, Access times and more…

Registration for both summer and fall begins Monday, April 16 – Friday, April 27. Before you register, you should see Stacey or Linda for advising. Just call 512-471-3458 to set up a time. Don’t email, as it’s too hard to go back and forth choosing a time. Calling is much more efficient.

 To secure a seat in a lower-division honors course, you must sign up in the LAH lower-division honors course book. The signup book will be available in the LAH office by Friday, April 6. Come by the LAH office to see what we have!

For any upper-division LAH 350 courses you can just register (no sign up necessary) when it’s your registration access time.

Registration hint: If the upper-division LAH course is cross-listed with your major department, you should register for it under your department. It will still apply towards College Honors. Many departments have signup sheets in their offices (I know Government does) and this guarantees you a seat.

Fall 2018 Legal Internship Course

This coming Fall 2018, LAH will be offering a new upper division course for students interested in interning in legal settings: “Legal Internships and the Law,” taught by LAH Lecturer and Assistant Attorney General Mark Levy, JD.

In classroom discussions and readings, students will explore the role of lawyers and how the practice of law has shaped American society. Students will also have an experiential learning component where they will gain hands-on experiences in public interest law offices or legal settings. The experience students gain will help shape classroom discussions, about such topics as legal ethics, government lawyering, and current events affecting lawyers.

Please be sure to review some pertinent information prior to registering for the course:

  • Internships must be in a public service, government, or public policy setting with a legal focus. Examples of suitable host agencies include the Office of the Attorney General, the Travis County District or County Attorney’s offices, Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid, the Texas Public Policy Foundation, judicial chambers, or a legislator’s office.
  • Work in a private legal office does not qualify for this course.
  • Students will be responsible for setting up their own internships, but help is available from the course instructor and Liberal Arts Career Services (LACS) for those who need it.
  • Students should have their host agency selected and approved by the course instructor and LACS before the semester begins.
  • Students will be expected to work at least 9 hours per week for 12 weeks during the semester.
  • Students who have interned for an agency before can continue that relationship for this course.
