Project updates
Unfortunately, because of COVID-19, our team will no longer be traveling to India this summer. Ultimately, this is the best decision for the health of both the individuals and the communities involved in this project, which has always been our top priority. However, we are going to continue moving forward on building this product, and we are hopeful that the extra time will allow us to build something even better than we could have achieved in our original time frame! Right now, the team still plans to conduct some focus groups this summer, and we hope to be in India in the winter.
Current progress
These past two weeks, Thomas and I both reached the goals we had set for ourselves. Mirroring the design of the tables I had created to store the module data, I created a layout for and coded the glossary into our database. We now have a complete database that is ready to store all the data we plan to put in the backend. I also did research into the best way to search through the database, which will be used to implement our product’s search function. Then, I compiled the commands for adding, editing, removing, and searching through our app, which will make it easier for us to connect the front end to the back end and for our community partners to continue adding to our app and website in the future. Thomas connected the front end to our intermediary module, allowing the app and website to draw from dummy data and display it accordingly.
What we have learned
Thomas has learned a lot more about the intricacies of React and building websites. I learned a lot more about MySQL, including searching and processing queries. Overall though, we both just continued building out the parts we had started last week, but we both definitely became overall more comfortable with our respective languages and frameworks.
What we have planned
Thomas is going to continue building functionality into the front end, such as a search bar and more in-depth app and website module displays. I am going to start working on the node connecting the front end and the back end of the product, allowing it to access the back end and package the data stored there into a format that can be understood by Thomas’ part of the project. It is all coming together!
