Context: Some of the Documents Cited in the Report on Tobacco (G206-31)

This document provides insight into Gálvez’s extensive inspection of tobacco production in New Spain. Here, he specifically discusses the large number of workers employed in this industry, which included women. His observations on the factory’s capacity to hold these workers, in addition to his listing of all the different kinds of jobs performed there, create a clear image of the production process. This written report and the data from the table that accompanies it, provide a useful summary on the current state of tobacco, a valuable trade commodity, towards the end of his term as Inspector General, or Visitador.
