Teaching Mexican American Studies through Local Archives and Community-Based Pedagogy

Teaching Mexican American Studies through Local Archives and Community-Based Pedagogy
Saturday, March 30, 9:30–3 pm, Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center

This symposium and workshop will focus on the creation of lesson plans with local archives for Mexican American Studies (MAS) curriculum. Community-based educators will discuss the creation and implementation process of MAS curriculum, and local archivists from the Austin History Center and the Benson Latin American Collection will talk about their collections and discuss the challenges and opportunities of incorporating archives into the classroom. As a conclusion, Cassie Smith (2018 LLILAS Benson Digital Scholarship Fellow) will lead a community- and praxis-based teaching workshop where participants will create culturally relevant and locally ground MAS lesson plans using primary sources from the Benson’s U.S. Latinx holdings.
