March 27, 2026, Filed Under: Lead Story, NewsStudy by Benge Finds Technology Use May Reduce Risk of Dementia A recent study coauthored by neurology associate professor Jared Benge, Ph.D., reveals that everyday digital device use among older adults may reduce the risk of cognitive decline by 58%. Benge’s article, “A Meta-Analysis of Technology Use and Cognitive Aging” published in Nature Human Behaviour with Michael Scullin, is the first to quantitatively test two opposing hypotheses about how everyday digital technology affects the aging brain. Their research dispels fears of widespread digital “brain drain” or “digital dementia.” Instead, it suggests that routinely engaging with modern technology such as smartphones, tablets, and other digital tools can help preserve brain function and stimulate social engagement, thereby helping to reduce the risk for dementia. Since its publication, the article has been recognized as one of the most impactful research publications in the field. It has been accessed more than 8,000 times on the journal’s website, has been cited more than 50 times, and has generated more than 400 media mentions.
