What is the PathWISE study?

PathWISE is an independent academic research study about the experiences of recent technology graduates in India. The study aims to better understand young graduates’ job-search experiences, career goals, skill needs, and early labor-market challenges.

Who is conducting the study?

The study is conducted by Manuela Angelucci (University of Texas at Austin) and Ketki Sheth (University of Tennessee), in collaboration with J-PAL South Asia at IFMR.

Why was I contacted?

You were contacted because you were identified as a promising recent graduate with a background in technology or computer science. In the past year, you may have enrolled in or interacted with an organization that works with young adults in the technology sector. As part of that process, you may have agreed that your contact information could be shared with researchers for academic studies.

Is this a job application?

No. This is not a job application and is not connected to any employer, company, college, or government office. Participation in the study does not affect any current or future job application.

Is participation voluntary?

Yes. Participation is completely voluntary. You may choose not to participate, skip any question, or stop the survey at any time.

What will I be asked to do?

You will be asked to complete a survey about your education, job-search experience, employment, career goals, and related topics. You may also be asked to share job-market materials, such as your CV or a short career pitch, if you are comfortable doing so.

How long will the survey take?

The survey length may vary, but the study team will tell you the expected duration before the survey begins. You can schedule the survey at a time that is convenient for you.

Will I receive anything for participating?

Yes. Participants may earn up to Rs 500 in Amazon vouchers for completing the survey and related study activities. Participants may also receive personalized feedback on their CV and career pitch.

What is “career pitch” feedback?

A career pitch is a short introduction you might use in an interview, networking conversation, or job-search setting to explain your background, skills, and career interests. If you participate, the study may provide feedback to help you improve how you present yourself professionally.

Will my answers be confidential?

Yes. Your responses will be kept confidential and used only for research purposes. Reports and publications from the study will not identify individual participants.

Will my personal information be shared with employers?

No. Your personal information and survey responses will not be shared with employers, companies, colleges, or government departments.

Is this connected to Anudip or another training organization?

Some participants may have been identified through organizations that work with young adults in the technology sector. These organizations may help the research team contact eligible participants, but the study itself is independent academic research.

Is there also a part-time remote job opportunity?

In connection with this research project, the principal investigators may also share information about a separate part-time remote opportunity for a recent computer science graduate or junior developer to support an AI-based project. This opportunity is separate from study participation. Participating in the study does not guarantee consideration or selection for the role.

Do I have to share my CV?

No. You may decline to share your CV or any other job-market materials. However, sharing these materials may allow the study team to provide more useful personalized feedback.

Can I participate if I am currently employed?

Yes. Both employed and unemployed recent graduates may be eligible. The study is interested in a range of job-market experiences.

Can I participate if I am not looking for a job right now?

Yes. The study is interested in your education, work experience, future goals, and career plans, even if you are not currently looking for a job.

Research Study Title:  Understanding the lives of young adults

What is this research study about?

I have come from J-PAL South Asia. J-PAL is a research organization that conducts studies regularly on various topics like health, education, poverty, and rural development across the country. The purpose of the research study is to understand the lives and decisions made by young adults in India.

Who is conducting this research study?

This study is being conducted by researchers at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the University of Texas Austin, and IFMR. The research is funded by the JPAL, a global research centre whose main mission is to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence.

Joining this Study is Voluntary – It is Your Choice

You get to decide if you want to join this study. Joining this study is voluntary, which means that it is completely your choice. Even if you join the study now, you can change your mind and quit whenever you want. You do not have to answer any questions you do not want to answer. Your decision not to take part will involve no penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. This means you can choose not to join or decide to quit without any negative effects.

How long will I be in the research study?

If you agree to be in the study, we will visit you for a survey up to three times a year. The study is expected to last 5 years, and no survey will take longer than 2 hours. Each survey is expected to take between 30 minutes to 90 minutes.

What will happen if I say “Yes, I want to be in this research study”?

If you agree to be in this study, we will ask you questions during each visit about your life and decisions you have made. The surveys will ask about topics such as:

  • Your education, work experience, and future career plans
  • Your health, family planning, and household decision-making
  • Your experiences and overall wellbeing at home and at work

What happens if I say “No, I do not want to be in this research study”?

Being in this study is up to you.  You can say no now or leave the study later.   Either way, your decision won’t affect your relationship with the researchers or any of the affiliated institutions. Please let us know if you are thinking about stopping or decide to stop.

If you decide to leave before this study is finished, what happens to the data collected from you is described below.

What happens if I say “Yes” but change my mind later?

Even if you decide to be in the study now, you can change your mind and stop at any time.

If you decide later that you do not want your information included in the study, then you can contact Samriti Chowdhury, Research Associate, J-PAL SA @IFMR and tell them to withdraw you from the study. If the study has been completed and we have removed all your identified information, then at that point it will no longer be possible to remove your details from the study. 

Are there any possible risks to me?

It is possible that someone could find out you were in this study or see your study information, but we believe this risk is small because of the procedures we use to protect your information.  These procedures are described later in this form.

Some information you provide may be processed using artificial intelligence (AI) tools to help the research team analyze the data. We will take reasonable steps to protect your privacy and keep your information confidential.

Other possible risks also include questions that may be uncomfortable or tedious.

We will take measures to protect your confidentiality, described below.

Are there any benefits to being in this research study?

We do not expect you to benefit from being in this study.  Your participation may help us to learn more about the lives of young adults in India.  We hope the knowledge gained from this study will benefit others in the future.

Who can see or use the information collected for this research study?

We will protect the confidentiality of your information by limiting who can observe your identified responses. This will only be available to the data collectors and researchers on the team. Your personal information will be kept strictly confidential. Your name and identifying details will be stored securely and will not be linked to your survey responses. Data will be analyzed only in de-identified form. No individual responses will be shared publicly or with employers.

The information will be stored on files that are password protected.

If information from this study is published or presented at scientific meetings, your name and other personal information will not be used.

We will make every effort to prevent anyone who is not on the research team from knowing that you gave us information or what information came from you.  Although it is unlikely, there are times when others may need to see the information we collect about you.  These include:

  • People at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, University of Texas, and IFMR who oversee research to make sure it is conducted properly.
  • Government agencies (such as the Office for Human Research Protections in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), and others responsible for watching over the safety, effectiveness, and conduct of the research.
  • If a law or court requires us to share the information, we would have to follow that law or final court ruling.

What will happen to my information after this study is over?

We may keep your information to use for future research purposes. Your name and other information that can directly identify you will be kept secure and stored separately from your research data collected as part of the study. We may share your research data with other researchers without asking for your consent again, but it will not contain information that could directly identify you.

Will I be paid for being in this research study?

To compensate you for your time in completing surveys for this study, we will provide a reasonable compensation (in voucher form) for each completed survey.

यदि मैं “हाँ, मैं इस अनुसंधान अध्ययन में रहना चाहता/चाहती हूँ” कहूँ तो क्या होगा?

यदि आप इस अध्ययन में शामिल होने के लिए सहमत हैं, तो हम प्रत्येक दौरे के दौरान आपके जीवन और आपके द्वारा लिए गए निर्णयों के बारे में सवाल पूछेंगे। सर्वेक्षण निम्नलिखित विषयों पर प्रश्न पूछेगा:
