Project SANA, the Self-managed Abortion Needs Assessment Project, is an interdisciplinary research group at The University of Texas at Austin. Project SANA seeks to examine the who, what, and why of self-managed abortion in the United States.
A self-managed abortion (SMA) is an abortion conducted outside of the formal healthcare setting. SMA can involve a spectrum of methods, but a key focus of our work is the increasing accessibility of self-management using the medications mifepristone and misoprostol provided through online telemedicine.
At Project SANA, we study the safety, effectiveness, and accessibility of self-managed medication abortion, as well as people’s motivations for self-managing and their self-management experiences.
