Partners

The Cañada Project represents a collaborative effort between residents, educational institutions, civil society organizations, and government offices. The partners listed below have all played important roles in the success of the initiative.

Mujeres Unidas (MU)- MU is a women’s cooperative in Los Platanitos that was founded in 2012 to oversee the vermicomposting pilot-project. MU works closely with project partner CIAMF.

Fundacion Los Platanitos (FUMPLA)- FUMPLA is a community foundation in Los Platanitos that was founded in 2010.

Centro de Investigacion y Acompanamiento de Mujeres y Familia (CIAMF)- CIAMF is a civil society organization dedicated to accompanying community organizations through technical support and capacity building efforts. CIAMF works closely with MU, employing an emancipatory educational model that promotes critical thinking and community mobilization. CIAMF has been a project partner since 2012.

The Municipality of Santo Domingo Norte (ASDN)- ASDN has been a project partner since since 2008. Various departments and officials within ASDN have provided critical support for the collaboration. Learn more about local government in Santo Domingo Norte here.

Ciudad Alternativa- Ciudad Alternativa is a civil society organization and urban think tank dedicated to promoting multidimensional change in the urban sphere and to advocating for dignified living conditions for all Santo Domingo residents. Ciudad Alternativa works on projects and programs related to institutional capacity building, community urban development initiatives, and public policy. Comite para la  Defensa de los Derechos Barriales (COPADEBA)- COPADEBA is a civil society organization and activist group specializing in community mobilization and urban social movements. Learn more about the work of COPADEBA here.

Fundación de Saneamiento Ambiental de la Zurza (FUNDSAZURZA)- FUNDSAZURZA has collaborated with the Los Platanitos initiative since 2010. FUNDSAZURZA is one of several civil society associations in Santo Domingo Distrito Nacional that manages waste collection under contract with the municipal government. The organization continues to provide technical support to both Fundación Los Platanitos and Mujeres Unidas. Learn more about the work of FUNDSAZURZA here.

Fundacion Agricultura y Medio Ambiente (FAMA)– FAMA is a small NGO run by Benita García Rosario dedicated to promoting small-scale organic agriculture in the Dominican Republic. FAMA operates vermiculture projects in Bani, Dominican Republic, has provided technical assistance to Mujeres Unidas since 2012.

Dirección General de Ordenamiento Territorial (DGDOT)– DGODT is an agency of the national ministry of planning and development. Formerly known as Consejo Nacional Urbano, DGODT has been a project partner since 2008. Learn more about DGODT here.

Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU)– The School of Architecture with UNPHU in Santo Domingo has been a project partner since 2012. Faculty members provide technical support and facilitate workshops and presentations to a city-wide audience. Learn more about UNPU here.
