David Dahl High Ankle Sprain

On August 2, Colorado Rockies all-star outfielder David Dahl sprained his right ankle in the sixth inning of the Friday night game against the San Francisco Giants. Dahl was playing center field in the sixth inning when he attempted to change directions to catch Giants player Scooter Gennett’s fly ball. Dahl made the catch but lost his footing and awkwardly twisted his right ankle. An MRI confirmed a high right ankle sprain.

Ankle sprains are some of the most common sports injuries and baseball players at all skill levels routinely acquire ankle injuries. A high ankle sprain is different from a common ankle sprain in that it is an injury involving ligaments located above the ankle joint and between the tibia and fibula, known as the syndesmosis. The standard high ankle sprain treatment is the same RICE protocol used to treat common ankle sprains: rest, ice, compression and elevation.
