BROKEN COLLARBONE

What causes this injury?

  • A fracture of the connecting bone between the upper part of the breastbone and the shoulder blade.  Broken collarbones often occur due to falling, sports injuries and traffic accidents.

Is surgery necessary for broken collarbones?

  • Surgery is necessary for this type of injury if the break is complicated enough.

What is the prognosis?

  • A broken collarbone can take six to twelve weeks to heal. This injury risks nerve and blood vessel damage and potential arthritis. Treatment options include medications and physical therapy. If complicated enough, implanted plates, screws and rods will be used to hold the bones in place during the healing process.

Astros’ Peacock begins rehab assignment

The Houston Astros’ Brad Peacock began his rehab assignment with the Triple-A Round Rock Express Saturday night, allowing five runs through 1.1 innings.

Peacock, who hasn’t pitched since June 27 against the Pittsburg Pirates, has dealt with right shoulder pain for more than a month. CBS Sports referred to it as inflammation, a non-specific and somewhat misleading term.

Everyone who throws a baseball as hard as they can repeatedly develops changes in their shoulder and elbow.  Most professional pitchers have some level of elbow and shoulder pain every day.  It’s not entirely clear what is limiting Brad’s effectiveness at the moment.
