Chuma Okeke ACL injury

The Auburn tigers basketball player, Chuma Okeke had an MRI which showed that he  torn the ACL in his left knee during the game against North Carolina on March 29th, 2019.

The injury happened when Okeke approached the basket. He planted his left foot as he tried to shoot, and his knee buckled, dropping him straight into the ground. Okeke immediately placed his hand on his left knee, and was rolling back and forth from pain.  He was last seen limping off the court with assistance.

This injury did not happen by direct force from another athlete. It was due to the way he planted his foot relative to his knee and body position, which caused him to be in an awkward position that placed enough force on his knee to cause the ACL tear.

Okeke had a successful ACL reconstruction on Tuesday morning of April 2nd. “Everything went well in the repair of his ACL,” Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said on the Paul Finebaum Show. Given that the surgery went well, there’s no doubt that Okeke will work to try to return for part of next season.

Allen Crabbe Knee Injury

The Brooklyn Nets professional basketball player, Allen Crabbe has not played since December 12, 2018  due to a right knee injury that occurred during a game against the Philadelphia 76ers. His right leg got tangled with 76ers center Amir Johnson, while taking a shot.  This knee injury was particularly frustrating to Allen, given that  it occurred during his first game after coming back from a left ankle sprain that  occurred in the pre-season.

It’s difficult to tell from media reports what the problem is with his knee.  One report described it as inflammation of a “fat pad”, but that’s not a common knee injury or diagnosis.

Media reports describe removal of the “excess fluid” out of his swollen right knee. There is almost never a good reason for doing this.  It’s difficult to make sense of what is going on.

Adding to the puzzlement, according to his coach, Crabbe will not have  surgery.

It is not clear how many more games Allen will be missing and whether he will be back any time this season.

Boban Marjanovic’s Knee Contusion

Boban Marjanovic, recently traded from the LA Clippers to the Philadelphia 76ers, was carried off the court with knee pain late in the game against the Pelicans Monday, February 25, 2019. The injury happened during a defensive play where Marjanovic’s leg was twisted and tangled up with New Orleans’ Cheick Diallo as the two were going for the ball. Boban was not able to get back up and he seemed to be in extreme pain.

He later had an MRI that showed only a bone bruise (contusion) and a minor ligament strain. There was no injury to the anterior cruciate ligament or other major injury.

This injury is similar to the Boston Celtics rookie Robert Williams knee to knee collision that happened during the first game of the Summer League on July 6th, 2018.  Treatment for a bone contusion is supportive and nonspecific.

Boban is expected to return to action before the end of the regular season.
