Astros’ Peacock begins rehab assignment

The Houston Astros’ Brad Peacock began his rehab assignment with the Triple-A Round Rock Express Saturday night, allowing five runs through 1.1 innings.

Peacock, who hasn’t pitched since June 27 against the Pittsburg Pirates, has dealt with right shoulder pain for more than a month. CBS Sports referred to it as inflammation, a non-specific and somewhat misleading term.

Everyone who throws a baseball as hard as they can repeatedly develops changes in their shoulder and elbow.  Most professional pitchers have some level of elbow and shoulder pain every day.  It’s not entirely clear what is limiting Brad’s effectiveness at the moment.

Rockies’ Arenado plays through contusion

Colorado Rockies third-baseman Nolan Arenado was diagnosed with a left big toe contusion on June 20 after fouling a pitch off of his foot in the top of the eighth inning, CBS Sports reported. Arenado was subsequently removed from the game after the injury and did not take the field in the ninth inning.

Arenado’s status for Friday’s matchup against the Dodgers was questionable, as his injury status was day-to-day. Arenado told the Denver Post he “felt a lot better” the next day, and was reinserted into the Rockies lineup for their series against the Dodgers. After being treated and taped, Arenado played in all three games of the weekend series.

A contusion (bruise) occurs when the injury is deeper than the skin but does not structurally affect the bone. While the bone is injured, it is still structurally sound. Contusions are typically day-by-day injuries, though some contusions may take longer to heal than others. The Mayo Clinic recommends resting, icing, compressing and elevating the bruised area.
