Derrius Guice Torn Meniscus

Derrius Guice, running back for the Washington Redskins, was placed on injured reserve after undergoing surgery on September 12th to trim a torn meniscus. The Washington Redskins plan for Guice to return after eight weeks of recovery.

The meniscus is a wedge-shaped piece of cartilage in the knee that act as a “shock absorber” between the thighbone and shinbone. The meniscus changes with age and arthritis. Meniscus tears can also occur with forceful twisting or hyper-flexing of the knee joint. Surgery is an option depending on patient age and tear location. Some very peripheral (close to the edge of the joint) tears are considered for repair rather than resection.

Alfred Blue Ankle Injury

Alfred Blue, American football player for the Jacksonville Jaguars, was placed on injured reserve on September 1stdue to an ankle injury. Blue was diagnosed with an ankle sprain after injuring his ankle in the first quarter of the preseason game between the Eagles and Jaguars on August 15th. Blue was spotted in a walking boot last week and will sit out on the first 8 games this season before he is eligible to return. This timing suggests it may be a high ankle sprain (syndesmosis injury).
