David Dahl High Ankle Sprain

On August 2, Colorado Rockies all-star outfielder David Dahl sprained his right ankle in the sixth inning of the Friday night game against the San Francisco Giants. Dahl was playing center field in the sixth inning when he attempted to change directions to catch Giants player Scooter Gennett’s fly ball. Dahl made the catch but lost his footing and awkwardly twisted his right ankle. An MRI confirmed a high right ankle sprain.

Ankle sprains are some of the most common sports injuries and baseball players at all skill levels routinely acquire ankle injuries. A high ankle sprain is different from a common ankle sprain in that it is an injury involving ligaments located above the ankle joint and between the tibia and fibula, known as the syndesmosis. The standard high ankle sprain treatment is the same RICE protocol used to treat common ankle sprains: rest, ice, compression and elevation.

Zion Williamson Bruised Knee

On July 5th, Zion Williamson, an American basketball player for the New Orleans Pelicans, left a game against the Knicks during the 2019 NBA Summer League due to a bruised left knee. Williamson took a knee-to-knee hit in the first half of the game and was ruled out at halftime. He was seen on the bench in the second half of the game with a bag of ice around his knee. According to a press release, Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin announced that the decision to take Williamson out of the NBA Summer League was a precautionary move and William would continue to train and condition with the team.

“Zion will move forward from this incident without issues,” said Griffin. “However, in an abundance of caution, we have made the determination that he will not appear in game action for the remainder of the NBA Summer League. He will continue to take part in training and conditioning with our performance team.”

Though Williamson missed most of the NBA’s Summer League, he should be good to play by the start of the regular season.

KLAY THOMPSON ACL INJURY

Source: NBA.com

On June 13, 2019, Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson tore his left knee anterior cruciate ligament ACL during game 6 of the NBA finals. Thompson was injured when he landed in an awkward position after being fouled by Toronto Raptors’ Danny Green on a breakaway dunk attempt. Thompson was seen falling and immediately grabbing his left knee, as medical staff rushed over. Thompson was helped off the court, but briefly returned to shoot some free throws before limping back off. The Warriors PR team updated on Twitter that Thompson had an MRI that night, which confirmed a torn ACL in Thompson’s left knee.

Thompson had surgery to reconstruct his ACL at the Kerlan Jobe Institute in Los Angeles on July 2. It’s preferable to allow a year’s worth of healing prior to returning to high level sports, but it may be reasonable to return sooner, and athletes are often motivated to do so.
