Zion Williamson Bruised Knee

On July 5th, Zion Williamson, an American basketball player for the New Orleans Pelicans, left a game against the Knicks during the 2019 NBA Summer League due to a bruised left knee. Williamson took a knee-to-knee hit in the first half of the game and was ruled out at halftime. He was seen on the bench in the second half of the game with a bag of ice around his knee. According to a press release, Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin announced that the decision to take Williamson out of the NBA Summer League was a precautionary move and William would continue to train and condition with the team.

“Zion will move forward from this incident without issues,” said Griffin. “However, in an abundance of caution, we have made the determination that he will not appear in game action for the remainder of the NBA Summer League. He will continue to take part in training and conditioning with our performance team.”

Though Williamson missed most of the NBA’s Summer League, he should be good to play by the start of the regular season.

Edwin Encarnación Wrist Fracture

Edwin Encarnación of the Dominican Republic and the New York Yankees was diagnosed with a fracture in his right wrist during a game against the Boston Red Sox on Aug. 3. A pitch by Josh Smith struck Encarnación’s wrist during the eighth inning of the game, which the Yankees won 9-2. It is unknown which bone specifically the pitch fractured in Encarnación’s wrist. Within the next seven to ten days, the team said Encarnación’s injury will be reassessed to determine the next steps for recovery.  That indicates that it is unlikely to be the scaphoid or other major bone.

Willson Contreras Hamstring Strain

On August 5, the Chicago Cubs’ catcher Willson Contreras injured his right hamstring while running to first base after hitting a flyball. After taking several steps, he grabbed the back of his right leg and limped and hopped the rest of the way toward first base. An MRI was performed, something that is not likely to help with management and something that would not be considered for most hamstring injuries.  The Cubs estimated Contreras will miss four weeks.
