Cam Newton Foot Injury

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton sustained a mid-foot sprain in his left foot after a sack during a preseason game against the New England Patriots. According to The Athletic reporter Joe Person, Newton sprained his foot after Danny Shelton of the Patriots tackled him by his left ankle. Panthers head coach Ron Rivera informed the media that Newton was able to walk in a boot after the game and is optimistic that Newton’s injury will heal in time for the season opener on September 8th. We’ve covered sprains many times on this site, but there is a severe type of sprain of the midfoot that it sounds like Newton does not have. It’s called a Lisfranc injury and is a complete rupture of a ligament between some of the midfoot bones. That injury needs surgery to heal properly.

Carlos Correa Rib Fracture

On Wednesday, May 29th, Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa was placed on the Injured List with a fractured rib (a break in a rib bone). Rib fractures are usually diagnosed without an x-ray because they are obvious on evaluation. Rib x-rays use a relatively high dose of radiation and can be low-yield.  If you fracture a rib, you should ask about avoiding an x-ray.

Correa told his manager and the media that he felt sore in the rib area after after receiving a massage on Tuesday, May 28th.  But a massage would be unlikely to fracture a rib. Perhaps that’s when he noticed the problem. Fractured ribs are usually due to direct blunt trauma. He is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. Reports noted that surgery will be not be necessary according to team doctors. Rib fractures always heal naturally. A full recovery is expected.

The main symptom for rib fractures is pain, especially with coughing or other sudden movements involving the chest area. It’s safe to keep active; American football players often play with rib injuries.  It’s more difficult to be an effective player with the pain.

Chuma Okeke ACL injury

The Auburn tigers basketball player, Chuma Okeke had an MRI which showed that he  torn the ACL in his left knee during the game against North Carolina on March 29th, 2019.

The injury happened when Okeke approached the basket. He planted his left foot as he tried to shoot, and his knee buckled, dropping him straight into the ground. Okeke immediately placed his hand on his left knee, and was rolling back and forth from pain.  He was last seen limping off the court with assistance.

This injury did not happen by direct force from another athlete. It was due to the way he planted his foot relative to his knee and body position, which caused him to be in an awkward position that placed enough force on his knee to cause the ACL tear.

Okeke had a successful ACL reconstruction on Tuesday morning of April 2nd. “Everything went well in the repair of his ACL,” Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said on the Paul Finebaum Show. Given that the surgery went well, there’s no doubt that Okeke will work to try to return for part of next season.
